I think that anyone who still uses slips is somewhat behind the times. We did away with slips a long time ago. No slips, no pencils, and soon - no (or very limited) physical books.

Some say not using books or slips is a sure sign of piracy. I say it's the way it should be, the technology is there to eliminate paper from your show.

Not necessarily true about no books = piracy. I just got my kiosk working so no more books or slips. I'm no pirate. If asked for a book by a manufacturer, I'll gladly print one up but that's all the books I will have.

...Well for me, I still don't mind carrying around books (2-3 instead of 6-8) but I'm not ready to give up slips. I don't have a kiosk and that's fine for me right now. Am sure it's good for others. However, when I do go with SongbooksLive, I still plan on having slips. I still like the personable encounter with the singers.

...If that's considered behind the times, so be it. I just like to interact with the singer beforehand instead of just calling out .... "Up next ____" and not knowing what they look like. Call me a Caveman.... "Kaveman Karaoke"

Well, if you're a caveman, I'm a neanderthal. I have absolutely no intention of using a kiosk or any electronic request system. We've been using request slips and (relatively) up-to-date professionally printed books since day #1. We also use a hand-written white board to show the rotation. How shocking is that?

I would likely lose half of my regular singers to technology. They don't want it... nor do I. They want that personal touch, and that's one of the reasons our shows have grown to be so successful. (we had 46 singers last night).

Behind the times? If you say so. Poor me!

I do believe that no books is a sure sign of piracy only if there is no kiosk (etc) present.

I would think that a pirate would not want their songbook posted on line. At least, they wouldn't put version codes on line. That's kind of the theory I have, but I'm sure there are plenty of pirates that don't care or aren't aware that they are surely assisting in their own potential "prosecution".

Earl, Earl, Earl my soon to be fellow Canadian. How could someone not want something if they don't know what it is? I know that's an oxymoron. Personal touch to me is being able to change with the times when it makes it easier for everyone. I finally got thru my issues with my kiosk and show computer trying to connect and I am live with a kiosk now. Will keep two books around for browsing but I don't promise to update them. Personal touch? My kiosk will be 4 foot from me. Anyone can use it, I've let people try it without instructions and they figure it out very quickly. No more scribbles I can't read. No more beer soaked books to clean up. No more people trying to read in the dark. No more people turning in slips with songs on them I don't have (and weren't in my books).

To each his own of course but I'm also look forward to stuff that customers don't give a darn about. Talking about printing the slips out and cutting them up. Buying the paper and ink to make the slips and songbook pages. Manually updating my electronic books and keeping the physical books up to date (always up to date with the kiosk). No more putting all the pages in sleeves in the books. Replacing books when they are worn and torn. Personal touch? It's still there, of course that's in the eye of the beholder. I don't see me going back to books, but I could be wrong.

P.S. Cost of replacing my books with the kiosk? $100 for the software (I know there are free ones out there) and pulling one of my old laptops outs of the closet to use and building a home made kiosk out of a office kiosk I bought from my company for a buck. How much does the average host spend on updating books and printing out songslips throughout the year?

I've done a lot to reduce the cost of books to the point where printing them out costs me less than $3 each. It is the time that is the problem for me. Every week I am finding damaged, defaced or missing books - and especially those that stink like day old beer.

No thanks. My books are in terrible condition right now, and I have no intention of lending another dollar or another day to fixing them. I have been working like mad on a new program to fix all of that. My time is best spent on it.

As far as no slips go, our singers know to just check in with the host. We'll keep them in the rotation, if they'd like. And if so, they are then instructed to know in advance what they'd like to sing. It is actually much easier then dealing with a million slips. Just have to keep a rotation record that includes artist and/or titles. Or, on slow nights, I just add the song to Virtual DJ's "Side List" and load it just prior.

you have to keep a couple books for the "technically dumb" people.....
you'll always have the people that refuse to use a computer or smartphone....

no reason to piss them off and never come back just because you got rid of books and slips.

I agree with that. But, back before going digital, we would rely on the singer to look up the song/catalog number. You always get the people who are too lazy to look up a song, so they would expect you to do it. But, you don't always have the time, and if you do, you know that person will never look up another song because they'll now expect you to do it. So, you want/ed to steer people to look up their own songs. We all have those techniques...

Much is the same with technology. I would think that you will have to do everything you can to steer people towards the technology. When all else fails, then you have to give in and "do it for them".

I’m sure a lot of kj’s who are techie challenge noobs like me would like to transition from (metaphorically) analog known as books & slips to digital known as the modern kiosk if they know the process.

Any of you guys would like to share the “how to” from A to Z of building a kiosk system? Software program, hardware, laptop kiosk sending song request to your side laptop or printer, winxp or win7. Instructions posted next to kiosk for your patrons to read & follow, etc.

I’m building one, I got some help from one of the posters here. I ordered Webplusx6 serif to incorporate pro design & editing, but I’m still soliciting more info maybe we can pick up ideas from your recommendations. More input from opposing minds = better research = better results. Thanks!

I think we kinda of got off track i started this post for information to those who wanted to print request slip and / or create better printed slips...oh well

We're still on track, GeminiMale40. Part of kiosk system is to be able to print request slip similar to song list generator & channel that to your system via smart phone or direct to your printer if you're tracking song slips for the night & have the physical paper copy.

Brian, hang in there. I had an unexpected delay, but I am about to introduce something amazing. Don't spend a penny on a kiosk. It's coming! I have all week "off" from "Daddy Day Care" so I can get it to beta testing. AND, it's free.

I have a good friend who sings with me. He goes to shows all over town and recently experienced a kiosk show for the first time. He did NOT like it one bit due to having to stand in line to use the kiosk. Perhaps if there was a provision to text message your song request into the kiosk he'd like it more, but this show didn't offer that option.

From my own viewpoint I'd rather talk to the singers if possible to make more of a personal connection and also so I could find out if I don't have something they want so I can get it for them...
