Just got back from our cruise. They had Karaoke every night so of course I had to check it out. While she was a good host, and they had tons of music I did not like her "singing" along on her mic when she got excited and into the song lol. Other than that, it was pretty good. Disc based and so on. But what was really interesting was there was one hour of karaoke followed by one hour of live karaoke (with a full band behind you). They had separate books to sign up from and away you go. I have to say, it was fun. Then, you finished out the night with Karaoke. Great time

I have always been told if you are a host that likes to travel, this is the gig for you. I have no idea how the cruise lines hire their hosts, I would imagine it would be like the casinos, you would have to have an agent to book you and pay an agent's fee. If I were younger and single I would look more into this end of the business. Having traveled I'm more of a home body these days.

Went on a Mediterranean cruise in 05 and they had karaoke the first night. Then without telling anyone, they selected 3 or 4 of the singers to perform on the last night for their big show.

Us guys can’t pretend not excited because it shows. No, wait, I don’t get excited anymore due to old age. It’s retired!

A friend told me about his med cruise, karaoke for entertainment. 3rd night they experienced bad weather, rough seas & high winds rock the cruise ship, speakers on tripod hit the deck. He propped his rig to stay in place. His advice if I ever accepted a gig cruise, remove the wheels from my rig & put speakers on the floor.

The closest I got to a cruise ship gig was dj/kj corporate x’mas party at the luxurious RMS Queen Mary, a tourist attraction permanently moored in Long Beach, CA.

You were a big step up from me, Brian. The closest I got were a couple of one-night gambling boats out of Florida.

I would absolutely LOVE hosting karaoke on a cruise ship! Too late now, I think. I don't even have the time for a vacation cruise.....

It varies by cruise line, but the person hosting Karaoke is almost always part of the "Cruise Staff", not a professional KJ. You report to the Cruise Director and are part of the stable. You may get to host karaoke at night, but you also have to host the belly flop contest, hairy chest contest, participate in the skits, be an usher at that evenings dance review, etc.

Here in Los Angeles, the cruise lines advertise for "Talent" (Lounge singers, Dancers, KJ Host, etc.) and are paid as a professional. Yore mileage may vary..

And this is where it would be advantageous for you to be PC based (which you are not). I have never been on a cruise yet (going on my first one in September), so I can't say if choppy waters would be a factor at all, or if the ship is so large, that everything is stabilized so that you wouldn't feel it (and it wouldn't cause your discs to skip).

They are so large, they are insanely stable. I've been on over dozen cruises and only once (while trying to outrun a hurricane) did I ever feel a cruise ship rock and/or roll. I still tell potential cruisers about my first time. The wife and I boarded early and were drinking in the bar waiting to leave when I asked aloud why it was taking so long to get underway. Turned out we had left half an hour ago and I didn't even feel it.

I use to have problems with skipping disc, not from my system but from singers jumping up & down the stage. I replaced my rig wheels with rubber motion absorbent pads & kinda eliminate some. I can play from my laptop & 4 singers’ jumps all over the stage & the music will not skip. The point? Yes, (guessing) I think rough seas & choppy waters could be a factor. :)

These were smaller boats, and DID deal with rough seas. However, like Brian, I have dealt with jumping singers as well, and have developed some nice "shock absorbers". Choppy seas were no problem. Also, wave action is less sudden a shock than a jumping singer....
