Newtown/Sandy Hook is in my "coverage area". Several of my friends have kids in the district. The area is in shock.

I'll be hosting Karaoke tonight, but it will be a very somber occasion. Sing one for the kids. Such a tragedy.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the victims, parents & families of this unspeakable tragedy.

I don't even think words can describe the sorrow of the families. To say nothing of the horror the police found when they first found the children. Hopefully the police will find out why, and what was going through the guys head to make him do such a terrible thing. Prehaps a moment of silence at our shows tonight.

ugh.

We had an incident of arguing at tonite's show that almost shut us down.

Imagine stupid punk kid puts in "Pumped Up Kicks".

My mistake. was busy. didn't think twice. just another song title to play.

Stupid punk kid at the end of the song dedicates it to the shooter. thinks it's funny.

People start yelling at him. he gets shoved. he starts cursing and gets 86'd.

Threatens everyone from outside. Police called. Don't know after that. :(

HOLY CRAP! I just looked up the lyrics for this song :o
I don't think I would have let it get past the first verse without shutting it off.
What the heck is with all the violence in this song (if you can even call it a song).

Isolating a person like the shooter, or that punk singer, from the rest of society is the only way to stop someone like that from doing evil. All the gun control in the world won't stop them. They will find a way. We are too easy on criminals, and crazies. If I ever become that crazy, where I could potentially hurt innocent children, or adults......please put me down for good, or at least lock me up, and throw away the key.

99% of people with psychiatric problems are victims rather than perpetrators of crimes. That said the person who committed this crime got what he deserved albeit it was by his own hand. If you become one of the crazies pray you're in the 99% and not the 1%.

Well, there's one that managed to slip by my do-not-play bin. I too, just took a look at the lyrics. You can bet "Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks" will NEVER be sung at any of my shows.

Thanks for the heads up.

What matters is, what percentage are they of the people who commit crimes, and how many crazy bass turds we fail to recognise as crazy. No sane person kills innocent people in cold blood, so we might as well let them all go. There should be no insanity plea. I wonder if this shooter was on any medication? Government, and the media depend on the drug companies...so you'll never hear of a possible link to any violent crime.
One thing I hope they learn from this....the stongest door, with the strongest of locks......is useless with a large glass window in it. Just like the cockpit doors in airplanes....being not much more than a curtain.....no foresight.

I have that song, so I check the lyrics - never been requested at my shows & I’d like to keep it that way. Just deleted it out from my library. Songs advocating gun violence is just plain wrong and has no place in any decent society.

We as KJs have a responsibility to at least have an idea of what we are playing to keep the energy of our shows positive. I feel bad that some sick moron used that opportunity of a Busy KJ to poke fun at a tragedy as sickening as that elementary school shooting. This gives me Pause and makes me look at what I am allowing my singers to sing more closely. As KJs we aren't after all, mindless JukeBoxes, We have to really be careful and take some responsibility for what we play. The words "I'm sorry I don't have that song today" can sometimes suffice in place of a parking lot beating by an angry crowd...:)
I did allow a few dedications at my show last night, thankfully none of them was to the shooter. I sang "Praying for Time" by request of the management.

Thank you all for posting your comments on that song.

I too was not aware of this song's lyrical content. It has never been requested at my shows, either. I can assure you that it's coming out of my library and songbooks immediately!

I have that song and also another one by them. Foster The People is now deleted from my library. How sick they are. I think that the record labels should take some responsibility for recording that garbage. And as far as the ones buying it, should raise a flag as to the demented kind of people they are.

Hey, I like that song!
I realise I won't gain much popularity from this, but don't you think deleting these songs outright is a tad knee-jerk? Perhaps you could have "flagged" them on your system. Will you also be deleting "Bad bad Leroy Brown", "You don't mess around with Jim" and the likes (including goodness knows how many hip hop songs there are in a similar vein) from your song inventories? Did anyone delete "Luka" when the Jimmy Savile scandal came to light?

However, I do agree with the point regarding that little squib who thought it was funny to attempt a joke out of this appalling tragedy, and I too abhor his callous timing. From the description, this individual sounds slightly deranged, especially with his affirmation of the gunman at the end of his performance of the song. Pumped Up Kicks is a very popular song at the gigs I attend, but I wouldn't choose to sing it this soon after what's just happened in America, and I would understand if the KJ rejected any requests for it that night.

Before anyone labels me a callous bastard... Yes it may seem easy for me to make these points from the other side of the world from where this massacre took place, but let me tell you this is very hot news over here too (as I'm sure it is in all parts of the globe), and I am as shocked and saddened as the next man. My thoughts are of course with the families and friends of the victims, in particular the teacher that made the front page of today's Independent On Sunday, who sacrificed her own life to save those of her pupils - only 27 years old, same as me.
R.I.P.

PS.. I trust without doubt whatever decision you KJs take regarding your songlist review will be the right one for you and your singers.

L.B., while it would not seem fun to me to do that song and it is not a mood I would want to promote to the world, I have not taken out a particular song called "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." Never a favorite even at the time but whenever I want to take out one song for a reason I always think of more that are hardly different that I have allowed in. "Mack The Knife" is still in the books.

I go back and forth between not wanting to be the censor and wanting to promote a certain clientele or loftier goal at my shows. I haven't censored the song book yet but would hope people choose appropriately. The person who sang the Foster The People song sounds like a sicko.

The more appropriate song which is truly about losing a child would have been "Tears In Heaven." It was done at my show Friday night.

I don't need a reason to omit a song from a show......if I don't wanna hear it or the boss don't wanna hear it.....you won't hear it.....it's that simple

“Lord” Burnstrum, if you have time I would like to request you read the full lyrics of both songs:

Bad, Bad Leroy Brown “He got a .32 gun in his pocket for fun” (adult situations).

Pumped Up Kicks (Kids - to “outrun my bullets”). I hate to type these words but I want to get my point across.

And the answer is yes! I deleted many, many hip-hop & rap songs from my library. If I’m a “tad-knee jerk” so be it!

One of the most popular songs at the shows that I frequent is DELILAH by Tom Jones. The audience participation is off the charts. It was sung last night by someone and the crowd had it's usual response. Clapping and cheering for the stabbing of a woman who cheated on her man. Now I know this is no comaprison to some idiot killing innocent people, mostly young children, but we, as a society, seem to be ok with certain kinds of violenece in our music. Goodbye Earl also comes to mind.

If someone gets stabbed by a jealous lover, are people going to remove DELILAH from their song books?

I recorded "Tears In Heaven" for the Singers Showcase yesterday,

It's like when everyone pulled Dixie Chicks songs because they made a snide comment about the president at the time.
Pull the songs that supposedly were the cause of kid suicides, when in fact many of those songs were anti suicide - Ozzy - Suicide Solution.
This song is nothing more than a situation, maybe not in the best tact, but just a song none the less.
