Was just looking at my CompuHost statistics. I have a little under 14,000 unique song selections (closer to 21K with duplicates). My patrons only sang 1362 unique songs last year, and a little over 30% of those were only sung once. I have a little under $9,000 invested in my library.

Obviously, as a KJ, we know that REALISTICALLY, you hav to have a respectable SIZED book, or some singers will just pass altogether, though THEORETICALLY, if I had just had those 1362 songs that people wanted last year, it would have cost me closer to $1,500-2,000, and my business would have been much more profitable. That's the balancing act for the working KJ.

If I were a home user, especially, I would just buy the songs I wanted to sing, like Lonman is suggesting. Sure, you might be able to get discs where you pay $0.10 a song, but who cares if you don't sing them? If you end up only singing 1/10 of those songs, then you are back to paying about $1.00 a song for those songs that you do actually sing.

If I were a home singer, I'd go the a-la-carte route. I think you'll save $$ in the long run.

Convenient to just say 1/10. I say 1/2 or 1/3 or even 1/4. Still come out ahead in the long run! Get a library started for very little money, then buy one at a time. Can you imagine having your sister, her family, your brother, his family over for a night. "How many songs do you have?" We have 15 but they are all killer!

Here's a perfect example of what I am talking about.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/All-Hits-Maxx-P ... 025wt_1141

Do the math on that, it's 3 cents per song!!!!! And look at the songs, tell me a newbie wouldn't get their money's worth out of that! That's how you start a library when you have a limited amount of money you wish to spend!

My first pack was similar to the one Ripman listed. You'll find many songs acceptable, and replace the ones that aren't. It's a great place to start at home. The issue then becomes ripping or converting if you wish to go file\computer based.

Again it wouldn't matter. If they are on on even the Cloud subscription like someone mentioned - now they can say they have 8000 songs, that only costs them $9 per month if i'm not mistaken! If they buy a prepaid All Star card for 30 songs, this is more likely more than most would do in a night of 'home' karaoke anyway - and then they have access tot he entire All Star catalog. It doesn't make sense to purchase big cores (that most of the songs would never be used) for home use anymore. If they belong to one of the cable subscribers (might be dish can't remember), they can get karaoke on demand via the karaoke channel - then they wouldn't even need a player.

I had a second laptop set up and people could use that to search Singsnap. They couldn't que up songs, but this was at home. As someone said, the finished karaoke show product is not required. I think someone even hit the singsnap site with the browser on there phone to search. I've got a decent to OK library but this was a chance for people to look for songs they never did before which is another wonderful aspect of home karaoke parties. I have another scheduled for Saturday a week from now. Works out well, we get lots of listeners without the bar room bull and prices..
Singsnap, digitrax, Karaoke Channel. they all offer streaming and I didn't have any issues with my home wifi.

If I were just starting out and stuck to home use, I would just subscribe and go that route.

Would be nice if the OP would respond to something so we can get more of an idea of exactly what he wants.

I think there are a lot of people that read this stuff without ever signing in. So whether it helps the OP or not, I hope it helps someone. I wish this sort of resource was around when I started and that's why I'm glad to offer my opinions. It would have saved me a crap load of money.. LOL

I agree. But if you take the time to sign up, and login to post a question, you should at least take the time to respond to something.

Available everywhere- just hard to see with your eyes closed.

I did find some last night! I was at a $1 store - they were selling blank 90 minute Memorex tapes - 2 in a pack for $1. Looked like they had been sitting there awhile.

And cassette tapes do have a shelf life even if it isn't printed on them. They are also susceptible to heat and humidity changes.

I also agree. I can't count how many times people posted problems on here, everybody gives them possible solutions...and they never post back to tell what the solution ended up being. The posting of the final outcomes, even if the problem was never solved, can be of valuable use to many of us.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I don't believe that most of the songs would never be used and at that price, they can build a pretty nice starter library. What happens when a company with a rental cloud goes under? Where's the library now? I want a good starter set and then slowly build it up from there. Not every home song that is bought one at a time is going to be used over and over, sometimes people find out that just because they like a song, doesn't mean that they will like the way it fits their voice. So the "risk" is just as great.

I just finished my budget for the last 60 days. I averaged $60 a month on song purchases and I am more of a home user type now. I figure that gave me access to an additional 45 songs. If I had spent $30 bucks a month on two services, I would have had access to I don't know how many songs. If a service closes down, it really isn't a big deal. It isn't like I bought a drive and can't unlock the songs on it. You sign up for another service and off you go. This isn't an investment for home users like it is for KJs. Its a fairly inexpensive hobby, considering someone would probably pay $30 or more to go do karaoke at a bar. And there is more cost than just a startup pack, if someone wants to play them on a computer. They must also buy software, and maybe a drive that can rip the disks. Plus the time. Then you also must consider the passing phase possibility. Someone invests in all the discs, software and hardware for home, then two months later they have moved on to a fish tank or something.

I think new home users need to consider all sides of this before making a bigger plunge than needed. If I were just starting out at home, I'd go with a subscription. The joy is in singing the songs, not the discs or files.

Sure you enjoy singing the songs, but then it becomes fun collecting cdgs. He!!, it would be more fun for someone just starting out, since they can get cdgs for a fraction of what most of us paid.

I was at radio shack today picking up a usb/hdmi adapter. I spotted a karaoke machine out of the corner of my eye. It was on sale for about 60 bucks I think. The box said it came with 200 songs. Reminded me of the box I bought over 5 years ago. Gotta be brutally honest about it, it sucked! The mic was of course totally crap, might as well just sung without it, and even then it was easy to be louder than the speakers in the player.

I say this not to the regulars on this forum, I'd be preaching to the choir! It's the people that are looking for answers and come here to ask questions. Well here's my answer, spend some money! If all you have is $150 or $200, you are not gonna find anything that will make you go to sleep with a smile on your face at the end of the night.
