Some hosts are thinking about selling out their business and retiring from the industry. I was just wondering what some hosts are thinking about this subject. Some hosts think it would be better to wait for better times and higher prices, I 'm not so sure.

I will never sell my business, I will always love karaoke. When the day comes I am tired of lugging gear around and want to retire, it will get setup one last time...in my house as the best basement system in New York. Awesome evenings with friends at "Bazza's Karaoke Den"

I talking more to the hosts that have in the back of their minds they might want to cash out. Personally I think that now is the time to sell, prices are not going higher they will be going lower. Anyone who thought these discs are grade A stocks or bonds, or gold coins it just isn't going to happen. The advances in technology will render the discs obsolete in the next few years. Really the only value they currently have is to back up your PC library. Much like the gold in Fort Knox is supposed to back up paper currency. Actually we haven't been on the gold standard for some time. Most host are not disc based there are only a handful of us left who are. Any equipment we now have will only get older from the time we purchase it. Getting back to discs you can't currently find a good player anymore. So from a purely business view now would be the time to sell, not later.

No plan on selling here ever. If/when I retire, I will also set it up in my basement. But that is a LONG way off.

I am 100% in agreement and have said so on many occasions, often to the great displeasure of others. Heck they are obsolete TODAY! Where is that CD store? Where is that Blockbuster video?

If you are hoarding discs as some kind of investment so you "have something to show for it" you will be sorely mistaken. They will however, look nice in the basement next to the box of VHS tapes.

This is what cracks me up about the hyper-inflated prices of the SC Eagles disc. If you've got one, sell it now while there are still suckers around to buy it for $250.

i already sold it all once back in 2007 the year i had to have back surgery.....
now with a 30lbs lifting limit, no repetative bending, and absolutely no bending with lifting.

i still ended up replacing everything i sold and starting karaoke hosting again.

and if i choose to quit in the future, i would sell it again. i mean money is money.

and i'd rather go out to sing with friends, then do a basement setup.....

Don't know about a cd store, I buy all my discs online now, but there is a Blockbuster not too far from me. Surprisingly since all the others around town have closed up shop, not to mention most all the other video stores - due to RedBox & on demand cable/dish.

Not for long. Netflix is now in 25% of US homes. I shoulda bought that stock at $35 when I had the chance.

Oh I don't doubt it. Like I said I was surprised that it IS still open.

Sell? No way! 2 years ago the venue where I kj’ed filed for chapter 11, I thought that was the best time to sell & retire. Doing it for so long it’s time to say goodbye to everything – my wife told me to really give it a second thought as she noticed I changed into a moody, isolated, irritable, short-fused temperamental person. The main reason was I’ve missed not having a karaoke show, the fun nights, party atmosphere, the music, the camaraderie from my regulars.

My wife convinced me not to sell, be patient & there will come a time when I’ll find another venue. Fortunately, it happened & I’ve never been happier doing something I truly love & enjoy. Sell? Never! Like others, my gear will retire in my basement for my family & friends to enjoy.

Thanks guys I guess all the money spent on discs is just the cost of doing business. They have been losing value due to technology, even if you could put the genie back in the bottle you will never recover what you have invested. Then you have to calculate if with the amount of money you have made over the years if you broke even, or even made some money. One thing is for certain other than insurance the discs themselves have little value, except to the collector, or a person that wants a song no longer in production. With the improvement of software to make your own karaoke from any audio disc, even the rare song will become a thing of the past. Besides the library what does that leave you with your basic equipment. I can see why everyone will be hosting in their basement. Have a blessed day.

Guys forget Netflix even, I just saw an ad for Rabbit on the T.V. You plug it into your PC like magic jack and puff you have 2,000 TV channels and 9,000 radio stations. All for $10.00., I can remember the 9 inch black and white and 7 channels.

I remember visiting my Grandparents farm in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. They only got 2 channels. One was CBS and the other would show some ABC and some NBC programs. Even then they were on the edge of the reception area and if there was weather of any kind they would lose one or both. (Did I just date myself? haha)

I too will keep all of my equipment. Just too much fun to have it and I would miss it terribly if I sold it. At that point living on a fixed income no way would I be able to go splurge for the stuff I have now, its taken too long and much sacrifice to get to this point. Karaoke/DJ bonfires and parties for the grand kids .

Or set-up shop at the Senior’s home where I will take up residency in the very near future. Hosting karaoke in my custom-built one laptop one pa system wheelchair. So, can't get rid of those cd's as of yet. Infinite 1:1 ratio (long arm of the law applies)

Absolutely agree with my respected ( debate though we may, we share a love of the business) collegue above- but I'll have the best basement show in New Jersey!

I will say this- if one DID want to sell, one might certainly try to hold out as long as possible and wait for better financial times.

I would also mention that the worth of your business will be mostly found in your client list and equipment. The way things are now- unfortunately- your library will be worth a lot less than you hope for. The exception would be for well known brands of CD+G discs to collectors. The MP3s are what's been pirated, and will never be in short supply. Just the way of it.

Build a solid client list, especially for private events, and you will have a nice payback.

My ego boost of the week: I've been booked for an event for Tiffany & Co., strictly due to rep- they called ME. That's a BIG smile for me, and will be a nice reference and addition to my client list.

But then you had the fun of driving the car and being in the shows, meeting people and memories, I guess those are worth something. We are all talking about the physical assets of our respective karaoke services, since we are in a service based business. What about the contacts we have established over the years? The venues we have worked with, the patrons we have made happy, there are some assets that don't transfer with the sale of a business. Have a blessed day.
