What do you say? I'm getting tired of "Whooooo come give it up for.....", or things of a similar type. In fact one miserable specimen on Saturday night asked my wifey to ask me to stop shouting in my usual joyous way after every song sung. Lordy

You don't have to yell it, especially if people are complaining....but here are some things I've heard KJ's say.

All right, that was Jane, wasn't she great?

Wow, let's hear it out there for Annie.

Excellent, Tim, love that song!

Hey, put your hands together for Johnny!

(You don't have to tell everyone to applaud if they are already are, though)

Wow, I love that song! All right!

You guys are doing great tonight!

Excellent, Sammy! Well done!

It's basically the same kind of comments we make here on Singer's Showcase.. sometimes it's hard to find adjectives without using the same ones over and over.

If your audience is truly not applauding for all singers, though, then you should make a separate statement during the night, like

Hey, don't forget, everyone coming up here to sing deserves applause, so please give everyone a big hand when they're done singing!

I'd just say.....next.....next.....nest......
You could shoot a blank gun, or pull the strings on some party poppers....
Say things like......woo hoo Billy-Bob......that was so hot, I bet there isn't a dry pair of panties in the joint....(used to be one of my favorites)
A siren, and maybe a strobe light tends to get some attention....but a simple....Sally get your a$$ up here now or I'll skip your turn.....tends to move things along.....and gets people clapping......

I try to mix it up all the time, some of the same ones that already have been posted,, and a few others. If you do the same old thing, time after time, then yes, people will get annoyed or tired of it. One that I sometimes use is this one "Applaud because it was good, or it's over",, either way the performer doesn't need to know the difference,, it's that they just got a round of applause.

Something pertinent about the song just sung, and if it was funny, or even exceptionally bad, there's no reason not to have some good humor about. "there's a rendition you don't hear everyday."

I have no shame. I'll totally go for the laugh, but always have respect.

I noticed no one is really paying attention anyway....

But yes--I do the describe what they just did thing--"She is so mild mannered but gentelman watch your tires," (Before He Cheats), "That was the Rainbow Rendition," (when two females do "Picture."), or "What was the Pope doing in a motel room?" (Because the Supercore version of Picture says "I was head of the Church" instead of "I was headed to church.") I describe duets as "Musical Events" because there is a country award for when Jimmy Buffet sings with Alan Jackson, etc. called "Musical Event of the Year."

Also people get nicknames as you get to know them so you can use those.

If it was weird but you don't want to hurt feelings, "I love that song."

When my partner seemed stuck on "Make some noise for..." I passed out noisemakers and told people that the next time he says that, let em loose but they didn't wait and made noise all night.

I have some sound effects like female orgasm and donkey braying and dogs howling but those have to be used sparingly. The female thing sounds more like laughter so it confuses people. Except Johnny Reverb. He's used to it.

ok, it all started when my first score pointed & asked me.....who I expected to please with that.....and I aswered...why me, of course.....
it's been nothing but laughs since then.....

Have truer words ever been spoken?

I always tried to pay attention to how many people in the audience were paying attention. It can be a little embarrassing for singers to see that no one is paying attention, then the KJ gets on the mic, wakes them up from their conversations and gets them to clap. It's like, all of a sudden they act like they loved it when the singer darn well knows the crowd didn't pay any attention at all. So what I would do is SHOW them attention during their performance. I made sure they knew I was listening and enjoying their performance. When they finished, I talked to THEM in the mic and would usually position myself to give them a fist bump or high five. "Man, Joe, that was awesome. I loved it". Usually, more times then not, people would clap but the singer at least knew I wasn't just throwing out a line to the audience to get them going. I had many that seriously waited for their fist bump.. I also used to jig, dance and clap a lot which sometimes would get the crowd involved on songs they normally wouldn't care for. The singers always had me as a fan and sometimes, that would be just enough.

Nice tactic. I always assumed applause is perfunctory--that is, that people are just clapping because they are conditioned to at the end of a song.

I actually got confused the first time I went to a very karaoke-oriented place, and the crowd was just *super* into it.

Love this one!!!! would be VERY CAREFUL when to use it though. Thanks for all the input. I use most of what has been suggested but was thinking more on the lines of the quote.
