I think Im done with the bar scene karaoke. Long story short this is the 3rd kj we hired thats went off on his own only to steal the shows he was doing for our company & take them along with him. We try to hire honest people only to get kicked in the teeth. My hubby usually runs the shows but has a full time day job along with doing weddings & parties on the weekends. We also have several other "side" businesses like wedding rentals & home decor vinyl lettering we do too. We hired this guy to do the weekly Thursday night show to help pick up the slack & let him use our equipment music name to do it & paid him exactly half of what we made which was just peanuts compared to what we were making this time 2 yrs ago. We've the karaoke jag offs around here undercutting eachother to thank for THAT No one wants to pay for karaoke anymore! The guuy actually had the nerve to tell us he would have stayed with us had we got him more shows...uh...why would we get him more shows knowing he had his own stuff were not stupid all the time! LOL! Anyways thats another rant!...
Sooo weve decided if anyone else calls us to do a weekly show if we cant do it we just cant do it. Its better than getting screwed every time we hire someone. Im glad we have the side businesses to fall back on and we dont "live" on karaoke. We dont like the way the karaoke music industry is going anyways. I guess its just the principle of the situation thats most annoying me. Thanks for reading my rant...Im done now, lol!

Have them sign a non-compete. I did. The ones that are just looking to do a few shows won't care and those looking to steal shows will. If someone didn't want to sign then that told me what I needed to know..

A non-compete agreement is usually not worth the paper its written on. Most people don't realize that, so they at least serve as a deterrent.

Sorry to hear that......sorry you don't come around here much anymore.
Almost made it by one of your shows last June......that facebook guy, asking about whether you still did the shows was me.... :) ......said you hired someone, and didn't do the shows yourself anymore, so I just passed on through, and hung out with Mike over on Cocoa Beach........ :(

Aww! Johnny I must not have realized who you were or my head was in lala land or something! I wish I couldve met you! I love meeting people from the net. I dont come around here alot anymore b/c I actually have started a few side businesses myself as I said earlier & I dont record anymore dont have time.I rent wedding supplies & equipment and I make gift baskets & home decor wall words I do photo crystals & plates and so my interests have changed over the past couple of years & dont sing alot anymore :( My hubby does the weddings & parties & thought we could "trust" this guy to keep the "bar side" of the business up & running. Well we lost all but one weekly show while with him & he decides to steal it! I mean we were in a bind one time & had him do a wedding & he got terrible feedback from them & lowered out total "score" on our booking website so we said no more weddings for him! Oh well like I said it was the principle surely not the $ we are upset about! To top it off hes now working for the 2nd guy that worked for us that stole our shows when he started out! And believe it or not the 1st guy that did it was my flesh blood brother! The 2nd was hubbys cousin!!! I guess were just tooo trusting! I hope they both get whats coming to them! Grr!

Kelley! Long time no see!

You just explained why I never went Multi-Rigger. I've seen it happen again and again...

I'm sorry for your situation, but would hate to see you give up hosting completely..

Hey Joe! Yeah I miss having time to myself to do karaoke recording & hanging out here :( Life gets in the way I guess! We'll still do weddings & parties but the bar scene is just getting a bit old & boring for us thats some of the reason why we hired someone for it. Now we have an extra rig...ya know anyone looking to get in the biz? We tried selling it to our kj but apparently he wanted the quick loaded hard drive instead of discs & all so it would be cheaper on him. Guess people think with all the karaoke manufact. going out of biz there is no need to be legit anymore who is gonna go after the pirates now? Anyways like I said thats another rant,lol....good to see ya again :)

I've been one of the lucky ones, in 20 years, have NEVER had a kj try to steal a show from me. I've given shows to a few that I couldn't do. I think it has to do with paying them properly to begin with and never having to do any of the actua set-up or tear down like they had to do in the past with minimal pay.

That's exactly what I was thinking here.

Yeah, the non competes probably aren't worth much but most people won't take a chance on signing one if they plan to weezle in on ya. I wouldn't ever stop someone from taking a different gig anyway. It would be the ones I set them up on that would matter to me.

On a side note, I could never work for another karaoke company long term, especially if the pay was very low.

I would never try to steal someone else's show either. I would be open to filling in for them, short term only though, if I had the spare time.

It's funny because I have this one woman who frequents my shows and always begs me to train her to work for me. Tonight was no exception. She keeps telling me that she is trustworthy and would never steal any of my shows. Thing is, I am not looking to hire anyone. I just don't have time to properly train, supervise and then worry about what they are doing in my absence. I applaud all the multi ops out there. I just don't think I am cut out for that.

I DO have one thing to say about this. Has it come to mind that the club WANTED him and not anyone else? As everyone knows, I run my friends show for him when he can't. I have had quite a few people say they would rather I did the show than him, including one of the owners. Sad thing was that he died a couple of years ago. Heart failure. Now in my case, the show belongs to one of my closest friends, so I would never do that to him, and I have told everyone who has mentioned this to me how I feel about it. Now, if he wanted out, and said I could have the show, then Hell Yeah I would take it.

But if he were just some guy I worked for, and not a friend, I would think about it. I would have no malicious intent, it's called free market. Now, if your guy TOLD you he would never take the gig and did, then he deserves an (@$%&#!) kicking. It's pretty messed up that you have family that did that to you. But just some employee? I have to say, it is a free market, and the club owner DOES have a say.

I had several people that helped me with my show and none tried to steal it. I had one singer try to steal the gig. I would say that all the customers, employees and owners had their favorites and it was not always me. If someone wasn't good enough to have their own favorites, then they probably weren't worth having. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that it isn't a good enough reason to undercut someone who gave you a break just because someone liked how you did things better than another...

In my case, the main owner would have preferred I run it all the time. I put a very low priority on the bar tenders singing so I am certain I was not their favorite at all. There are a lot of reasons why someone may prefer one person over another.

OK Im feeling a little attacked here...I dunno about you guys BUT...I think we paid him quite well! Remember hes using OUR equipment OUR music and we gave him HALF of what we were making...Whats wrong with that? I mean does your full time job boss give YOU HALF of what he makes? NO he wouldnt make anything himself. Remember Im ALL LEGAL too...I BOUGHT music I didnt just give him a loaded hard drive off ebay or anything. I know you guys know how much it takes to stay "up to date" with all your karaoke music. We even gave Christmas bonuses to these guys! Jeez!

I think half is completely fair, especially for using all your stuff which is a big part of it. So what does the guy do for equipment and music when he steals the gig? He stole the gig with Kelly's stuff and then comes in with completely different stuff?

This WAS one WE set up! It was MY companys show,he just worked it! I could care less that he went off on his own but to steal the shows that he was working for us instead of going out & getting his own is BS in my book! I dont fully blame him we went to the owner & asked & since our dj had been working the show & created a sort of "following" he wanted to keep him instead of bringing in a new (hubby) kj...I understand that to an extent I mean I see his point of view, but when it comes to loyalty to our company he had none! WE provided quality equipment & music WE made sure the dude showed up & when he didnt WE covered his a$$. I dunno Im just bummed about the lack of ethics in the whole karaoke industry itself I guess.
