From BEHIND the equipment or IN FRONT of the equipment. Me? I'm in front of the equipment. I find that I can interact with people better and join in the fun!!!!! (When at the party venue rather than the "singing" venue).

Actually from THE SIDE at one show, and from the BACK at the other show.

Once the music and mics are SET, then it's only a step away to join in :)

Don't you HAVE to be behind the equipment to run a computer/disk player? :?

I think he might mean: facing the audience or back to the audience when running his computer/player/mixer.

I always face the audience. My equipment is between me and the audience, with me facing the audience.

Depending on the space, I prefer to have the table sideways and me in front of it. I am a disc show so that lets me run everything but still be looking forward and just a few steps from the singer if they need something. It also makes every thing I am doing easily viewable. But at one place I have to set up with the table behind the singer and me behind the table just because of the room shape.

I prefer to set the table up sideways and I stand facing the singers so I can control volumes and still talk to anyone that comes up to me. Hopefully avoiding anyone getting in the way of the singer.

Facing the audience & side of the singer (space permitting). Interaction with singers is important to me. I like to be close & be able to interact with them for questions prior to singing, small talk (during long instrumental break), and/or even maybe reassurance. Some will have that feeling I’m close to make things right. :)

Cons: foot traffic from audience approaching me + conversation distraction.

I really liked my final setup. It was a counter where we faced the audience. The counter almost butted up to and had easy access to the stage\singers on one end but was open and inviting to the crowd on the other end. I set a TV and rack on the singer side so people would want to go to the other end to talk to us. We also had quick access to the crowd if needed.

I am off to the side of the stage, behind my equipment facing the audience. Back is never turned to the audience.

In both of my weekly shows, I'm behind my table/console... with the singers in front of the console and a couple of feet to the left. This way, I hear what they hear from the floor monitor, and I can catch their eye if need be. And I never have to turn my back to the audience.

So, in order, there's me... my table/console... the singer(s) ... audio & video monitors... speakers... small dance floor... audience... larger dance floor.... bar.

I don't think I could ask for a better arrangement.

When I was hosting I always tried to set up like my photo shows. If I had a little more room I would move my rig closer to the audience.

Always in front of the equipment and discs, never sitting.

The singer is at slightly to one side of center, I am farther to the other side for access to settings.

far end of the room away form the singers, behind the gear facing in. this way i hear the system in the room and not the singer a few feet away, and have more control of the overall sound taking the room acoustics into account. like i would do with a live band.

That would be the best way to set up. Especially if you could run the cables up in the ceiling or tuck them away where no one can trip on them. I have the 2 floor monitors coming straight at me so I hear the sound real well. But back of room would be best. I play a lot of customer cd's and that would add a lot of extra steps for the singers.

Cheers all, I never thought of having equipment set "side on". It has been a concern of mine that I turn my back to everyone when inputting requests onto laptop. I will try this next time. Nice one!!!!!
