Nice sound Max, very soulful... and I certainly don't know everything, but I do know the system that I work with five nights a week.

As others have said, i think the key is letting the KJ know you have a hearing problem, and that might help. On my board I can adjust the monitor completely separate from the floor mix to accommodate the singer, and I do have hearing impaired singers who need that.

Yes it is always a good idea to let the KJ know when there is an issue.

I have a regular at one of my shows who would always complain that she couldn't hear herself. I would just keep turning her up louder and louder to the point where her voice was so loud that it was hurting everybody's ears.

My breaking point with her came one day when I had her vocal cranked extremely loud and she was yelling in the mic, "Turn me up, I can't hear myself!!!" I use wireless mics and she was out in the audience, not by the floor monitor. People were complaining to me how she was hurting their ears with her voice.

So, in one of my moments of weakness, I said back to her on the mic, "Dear, I can't turn you up any louder because your voice is so loud right now that you are hurting people's ears."

When the song was over, she came and apologized to me. And that's when she told me that she was completely deaf in one ear and could barely hear out the other. Wow, after she said that, then it all made sense to me why it was always so hard to please her. From that point on, I knew how to deal with her. I have to turn her karaoke track way down so that she hears almost nothing but her own voice. So far, that's been working for her and she hasn't complained anymore.

i guess it really boils down to, do you mix for yourself are for other's...that's the one's i have a problem with...i'm a very easy guy to get a long with normally so it's not that big a deal if i can't hear i just won't sing another song...simple...but around here i can speak for other places new k j's are cropping up every day not nowing 1 thing about what there doing...i went to an R V park where a friend of mine has karaoke just for friends...nice system, the house is sooo loud you can't hear the monitor at all...and a lot have just left and never came back because of it...but he refuses to listen. plenty people tell him it's to loud and could it turn up the floor monitor are turn down the house some...nope....i got there early last night and he was telling me that he's sick of everyone coming to him asking him to do this and do that..he said i'm not going to just sit here for every person ...he likes to go out and smoke alot...where he sits he can't hear the monitor at all, none. i told him well then get a compressor that would help a lot..he said heck no, there not what there cracked up to be and pointed to his mixer and there was a compressor in it...he said name me 1 person on this coast that uses 1 and the truth is i couldn't...so there's some people that just want listen are can be helped...but all my friends go there so we all deal with it...when you can hear urself it's the best sound in town...

I think Max is wanting a sing off with you on the singers side of things.

I can name you a bunch of people here that use them. I won't run a show without one on the mics. Ask any sound engineer, if the system allows for it, they would have a compressor on at least the vocals, most likely the bass guitar & probably kick drum at the very least. But vocals first.

I'm still trying to figure out how being a good singer qualifies a person as a good operator.

If I challenge you to a singing contest, and I lose... does that mean that I must not know how to operate my equipment? Is this a new karaoke rule or guideline? If so, I guess I missed the bulletin.

I don't think anyone claimed that a good singer would make a good operator, but a singer does know what THEY want to hear when singing. If a singer wants to hear more of themselves in the monitor or less of themselves - what's the big deal? Keep the main mix in tact and adjust the montitors. That is sound engineering basics - adjust for your singer.

i completly agree with lonman...

i agree with useing a compressor but around here most don't even know what E Q is so there not about to even think of useing a compressor...and i'm glad there not because a compressor can also do more harm then good not knowing what your doing..

and i think i just made mine...

Really? What's that got to do with this thread? I never professed to be a great singer. You won't find my songs on singers showcase, want to hear me, come to my show or look on youtube.

I don't know how you figure, but keep on thinking that. My point was and is, if you come to my show and start giving me orders on what to do with my equipment, it won't happen. You act polite and I will treat you with the respect you deserve. Nothing more to say, I'm done with this thread.

you won't find anywhere in this thread that i said anything about being rude are barking orders, infact when i mentioned it i said could you PLEASE raise the vocals? and YOU are the one that was calling names BUB...are useing the word ignorent...THAT was rude...

The plus about the KJ being a good singer is that they are more likely to have a good ear, and to pay attention to EQ and FX.

My biggest complaint has to do with KJs who set the EQ for their voice and then don't touch it. If they are female or are a tenor, it ends up really sucking for a baritone or bass.

that's true mckyj and i noticed a lotta times the k j's mic is always louder and sounds better then anyone else's...
the sounding better i understand i'm shure it's a better mic..i would do the same and he can set the mix just for HIS voice and no ones else..again i understand but his volume i don't ....

I never understood the reason why many kj's seem to have the 'good' mic. A good kj shouldn't be singing if there is a big crowd IMO, and you don't need a 'good' mic for just calling people & making announcements. I have the same mic for my singers as I do for myself. And I STILL get the - I want to use your mic, it's better.
