This last Saturday, one of my regulars approached me at the bar after I was finished setting up. She told me she loves to sing but has a hard time coming up with songs she wants to do. She said she will often hear a song on JACK FM or a classic rock station, make a mental note of it, then forget what it is by the time she rolls in for karaoke.

She suggested that I write the names of popular songs that everyone knows on little slips of paper, place them in a fishbowl, and label the bowl with something like "Don't know what to sing? Try one of these!"

So now I am leveraging the list from StarzKaraoke to create the slips to drop in the bowl. Hope to have it in play by next weekend (we have a special Prom Night Karaoke party this weekend).

We talked a little further and decided we could use it for "suicide" songs as well.

Will let ya'll know how it works!

Do you have CompuHost? I have a laminated sheet of the most popular 300 songs based on my CompuHost Fun Facts.

It honestly isn't used as much as I thought it would be, but some people find it handy.

Nope. I run Karma. All the data is stored in XML files so I am working with a buddy to write some simple apps to parse the XML data so I can do some data mining.

that's a great idea Chris! You could make one up for duets, male favorites, and female favorites and simply put them out! Love it.

Hmm... I listen to Jack FM too. I have also gotten song ideas from the radio...and sometimes forget them.

I checked out Jack FM's website and unlike some stations, they publish their playlist:
http://jackseattle.cbslocal.com/playlist/

so you might want to let her know about it. I also hear songs I'd like to sing when I'm at Starbucks sometimes. Some of the Starbucks have reader boards that tell what song they are playing, but it seems like they have taken them out of some of the Starbucks. Too bad...

What really bugs me is that I've had this one song stuck in my mind for a long time. It has a refrain something simlilar to the intro to Rocky Mountain Way (the da-da-da-da-da-da-da-DAH) but I thought the words following it were something like "Nobody does it quite the way you do" (no, this is not the Spy Who Loved Me, it's definitely a rock song). So if anyone has a clue what that song is, shout it out.

Hmmm, the Spy Who Loved Me, a Bond 007 movie – Carly Simon “Nobody Does It Better”. Great song.
This is gonna be a long shot because I’m just guessing. If that’s not the one – maybe one of these?

Radiohead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di3s-ZaD_pk
Oleta Adams & David Sanborn http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQ9feIf3xy0
Pixie Lott http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0YfNsshp_ho

Disregard if none of the above.

Yup. That is exactly what I am doing. I have narrowed it down to two methods - 1) Print the songs on cards about the size of business cards and have them laminated so they can better weather the bar environment, or, 2) Buy a bunch of ping pong balls and write the songs on them with Sharpie's and toss them in a box. I like the first idea better. More compact, easier to store, and more durable.

But Ping Pong balls are just fun. :)

Sounds like "The Stake" by the Steve Miller Band. The actual lyric is "Nobody loves you like the way I do".

masterblaster - I believe you got that song right. seattledrizzle described it as similar to Rocky Mountain Way & Steve Miller's 'The Stake" was definitely similar, the tune & guitar riffs. Either ripped from Joe Walsh's RMtnWay or vice-versa. But what do I know? again, I was just guessing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHKagkLaoM0

My two cents,,,, yes it is the stake. Love the song, album artist. I have it and the lyrics with me right here on my itunes at work.

Burnin' burnin' all you can take
Wheels are turning in the bed you make

I'll take you over, you're tied at the stake
Nobody loves you like the way I do

Light rain's over
The sun's all around

Four leaf clover
As I pull you down

I'll take you over
You're tied at the stake

Nobody loves you like the way I do
Nobody loves you like the way I do
Nobody loves you like the way I do

Always had/have this problem as a singer. I used to bring a list with me to the show. If I hear a song on radio and I don't want to forget it, I use the SoundHound app to file it (I can go back later and look at the history and find the song). SoundHound even shows the lyrics while the song is playing and keeps them in time with the song even if the song is switched off.

I use Shazam to capture songs I hear and then copy the data to an Excel spreadsheet that I keep in SkyDrive.com. That way I always have access to a list of music I am familiar with and can choose from when I get stuck for something to sing.

Don't you also hear songs and then think of one of your regulars who should try that song? I have to keep an index card (I know, not very Shazam) to remind myself of what I should next inflict on who.

masterblaster, you nailed it! I never knew the title and never would have guessed Steve Miller sang it and I haven't heard it for several years and it's been bugging the heck out of me. Thanks a lot! That would be a good one for karaoke.

Chris, I contacted Bob Latshaw about doing something like this in the future, and I don't think that it will be coming any time soon.
