I do not allow others to join a singer onstage in progress unless it is totally obvious they want to be joined. I've shued (sorry Bruce, my spelling) 10 or 20 singers off the stage.

Having said that, I've never had a problem with someone joining me and my singers know that. Yes I like being on stage and being the center of attention but I know it isn't about me. Plus it gets others interested and I've had some that had never sung at my show before (and probably no where else 'cept the car and shower) bust thru their shell and join me. In fact I sometimes encourage and ask for someone to help me out.

What's your experiences?

Not looking for the obvious,,,,,, I only sing if the rotation is under------ and all that, I know the take on that.

I would simply motion the singer to a thumbs up to see if they are cool with that. Having a random singer run up on stage and not be invited or part of that group would clearly have cause for protecting the current singer on stage :-)

^^^^ This....
Depending if i thought the singer knew the person or what condition the "intruder" was in. If it's someone that was or slightly out of it, I used to try to divert them over to a table with a book to see if I could help them find a song. If I got the, "but I wanna sing that song" type response I'd tell them that we can wait a round or two and they can do their own version.

As for joining me, it depended on who it is. If it was a shy singer that hardly ever put in a slip, I'd motion them on up. If it was a regular already in the rotation, they better know better.

Pretty simple for me The only live mic. is the one the singer is useing.
I have been to shows singing and had drunk patrons come up and
want to sing with me. I just glance at the kj and shake my head no
and almost always the kj will kill thier mic. If I am singing at my show
It does not bother me if someone comes up and wants to sing along.
as long as they are not drunk as a skunk and can balance and behave themselves...

I now keep all mics offline except the main singer mic. I also keep them out of reach and if possible, completely out of site. I have no issue with someone joining in as long as it is okay with the singer. Usually requires approval before the singer starts though. Don't usually let folks jump in after the fact without a nod or thumbs up from the singer.

I have it stated in my books that if you were not invited to sing by the singer, don't go up there. Also only one song per round with one free duet per evening.

A couple of weeks ago I sang the first song of the night and was joined by a woman who was not invited. I thought, fine I'll let her sing with me. She then proceeded to jump up with a couple of other singers during the first round. The second round she jumped up with three other singers before I finally told her that she would have to sit it out and have only one turn per round. She argued with me about it for a song or two. I let her know that I would be happy to have her sing one song per round. Eventually her friend submitted a song for her and when her turn came up she proceeded to yell that I was an a**hole and for me to go to hell, she wasn't gonna sing. A short while later, she tried to jump up with a regular singer who always refuses when someone asks to sing with him and I wouldn't give her a mic. For the next two hours she proceeded to yell that I was an a**hole about six more times. On her way out she let me know that she was going to tell everyone she knew that I was an a**hole and not to come to my show and flipped me the bird!

After she left a couple of my regular singers came up and told me they were glad I had stopped her as she was ruining the songs and making a fool of herself.

Sounds to me like you let her run all over you. Bad form.

The first time she gets up to sing with me, I "may" allow it. The second time, if she's uninvited, I wave her off. After that, it's in the hands of whoever is in charge of security.

Calling me names in front of the patrons.... that get's you thrown out on your arse right now. Either that, or I shut down the show on the spot.

I typically try to keep the stage jumpers off, 9 out of 10 times, the singer does NOT want someone else coming up with them if not invited. I even get people that complain that others are sticking their name on duet slips as they don't want to sing with the person or the song.
As for me, I prefer singing solo, i'll shut off all other mics.
