If someone came over to my house to sing; I already have a cassette player and a Laser Disc player in my karaoke system. If I had a regular show that had people bringing in Laser discs and or Cassette tapes; I would bring those devices with me. If I had the same Laser Disc as the customer, I would rip the MP3 from it and make my own CD+G file for it. If the guy with the cassette tape was sonmeone who came to my show on a regular basis; I would buy the CD+G of the songs that he wanted to sing from that tape and if they weren't available for sale, I would ask that person if I cold borrow his cassette tape and I would make the CD+G graphics for the songs on the tape and burn him a CD+G disc. Then he wouldn't have to read the lyrics from a piece of paper any more.

THAT IS CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Bruce, if you "had"(and I wish you did) a regular karaoke gig, and you brought & did all the things you claim you would......you'd probably still do something to pi$$ yourself off, and quit going to your show.....

Whatever you say Johnny. Regardless of what you believe, I would go out of my way to give my customers what they wanted and wouldn't complain about it and make hooking up an extra piece of equipment seem like a major carastrophe. If I had to I would have an extra laptop on the table to test out a thumb drive for any viruses before plugging it in to my show computer. Why KJs are so against accomodating their customers is beyond me. It's as if they get an inferiority complex if someone has a song that they don't have so they won't let them use it at their show. I have at least a thousand songs that no KJ will have in his library. I go to shows that don't have issues with me wanting to sing songs that are not in their book. They're just happy to have a regular customer who spends plenty of money at their show and sings plenty of really good songs that don't make people want to go outside for a cigarette. I went to one show where the girl ran KJAMS on her apple laptop and didn't know how to load a CDG Zip file from a thumb drive. I converted the songs that I felt like singing at her show to video files that will play on any computer at all. Just plug in the thumb drive and double click on the song that you want and it plays just like a movie.

At least a thousand karaoke songs, that no kj will have in his library............I find that.....impressive.... please forgive anything bad I've said about you....it was all in jest....have a good day, my good friend....... :)

But people DO bring in cdg's because they KNOW I can play them. If you don't advertise you can, no ones going to bother to bring them to the shows so there would be no point in trying to attract those customers.

Even if you don't advertise it, there are people like me, a person that likes to vacation in other states and try to find a Karaoke show for 1 or 2 nights. Yes, it may only be a 1-time visit, or even a once-a-year visit, but I'm not looking for an advertisement that specifically says, "I can play the customer's personal tracks." (or something close to that effect). I don't recall ever seeing any advertisement for a Karaoke show, where it indicated any such thing (let alone what format the KJ operates in). And forget calling up a venue to ask that sort of question... you might be lucky to reach a person that knows what you mean by CDG or HD (let alone whether they even know what night/s and time/s the show/s is/are on (some don't even know the name of the KJ or his/her company name)).

I've had it on my website for a couple years now. Just made a blurb pic for my facebook page as well. Am going to start updating all my web ads to reflect this as well. Again, I get people bringing discs because they know I can.

Being disc based, of course I can and do play customer discs, and quite often. At least some every night. Being able to do so ( AND mix them- some PC hosts can play but can't mix or use effects with them. Still haven't figured that one out) has brought singers from other shows. Keeping 'em happy is what it's all about.

However, it all has to do with customer demand. I happen to have singers at just about every show that bring some of their own discs. Sometimes it's just what they are comfortable with, sometimes they simply weren't sure if I had a particular version or not. Sometimes it's just a matter of habit.

However, that's discs. I'm not going to bring out my LD player for one customer. I do have a small cassette deck that I can run through my system with me, though I've rarely had to use it except for some original music written my some singers.

In regard to these two mediums, chances are that I have the track on disc anyway- or at least that's the way it usually works out. Therefore I wouldn't be leaving a customer unhappy.

Although I use a disc player, and although it has USP and card ports, I won't use them. Won't take chances with what is on the media. The exception-if I ever happen to see them come out- would be a manufacturer's card or drive.

I went to a VFW last night and the host had quite an elaborate set-up with lights, props, projector & screen, huge 18" floor monitor, AND every song imaginable. He used 2 laptops, 1 for karaoke, 1 for filler. His main draw was probably that he played "customer CD's"......lots of them, and he did it very effeciently. There was an ocassional pause in the singing to wait for a cd to load, but considering the number of singers with their own cd's, it was very acceptable. I don't think he played any ones thumb drives, but I bet if asked he would give a try.

The place was packed with 41 singers and he got all through in 2 hrs 25 min. A lot of people left after singing their first song because they knew there was no chance of singing a second. This was an older crowd, and drinks were real cheap ($1.75 for pint of beer, $2.50 for a good mixed drink, $1.50 bottle of water). He told me his pay was $150 for 3 hours and he did get some tips, and the more tips he recieved the later he stayed.

All apperared good but his mixing skills lacked. Regardless of all the other attributes he had, that was a killer for me. His 18" floor monitor could not be heard and the mics were mud for everyone all night.

PS. Do I think he owns his 100K songs......without a doubt he does not.......did anyone in the room care.....absolutely not, except for me. Is he my "unfair competition", YES, but does he affect me, NO. I do all of things he does (including thumb drives), and I own over 60,000 songs on cd's (90,000 including dupe cd's).
