Here's something that came up a few years back. Friend of mine wanted to record himself singing karaoke songs and then sell them to the GP, IE; friends and family. Legal? I was thinking not, but?

Sure.. If he pays all of the royalties..

Sounds like your friend is always good for a laugh....

Royalties? Yeah, to who? Song writer, ya, then who? The recording would have been made off karaoke disc. Yeah my friend is Mr Funnyman alright. But he is good singer. But I would like to investigate this.
Now does this include youtube type of recordings?????

...(Q) - "I'd like to record my singer's performances and then sell (or give) them a copy of the recording. Can I do this?"

...(A) - "No. This is a commercial use whether you sell the recording or give it away. Permission must be granted and mechanical royalties must be paid directly to the publisher and you must pay a master track fee for the use of each Sound Choice song."

...If I were you and had any questions about this subject, I would just directly call the Karaoke Manufacturers. Nothing personal against anyone here but why take a chance?

Allll righty. Thank you that was helpful. No, Not gonna get into illegal stuff. Prided myself in being legal for 20 years. So that would probably cover youtube type recordings put out by singers, WHOA, what a mess that could start.....

He would need to obtain the copyright from the original copyright holder in order to sell or distribute them. Sometimes it could be a simple letter of ok, to a large fee. This is per song mind you.
Youtube polices their own site, if something is posted without permission and the copyright holder says something, it will usually be taken down. I won't post anything on Youtube (or any other site) that I was video'd or recorded by me.

I believe there was a thread at one stating that the SS is covered through the publishers - probably why the charge for the memberships to cover publisher costs (speculation on my part). Also they aren't downloadable, so the songs aren't being distributed.

I am just trying to find out the legalness from people like SC, CB, All star. Do they have say? It is their music and disc that was recorded.

Actually, YouTube has a bot that reads/scans all posts and deletes the offending music.

I've had some video with the audio muted, and only one left up with audio.

In that case, Youtube and the rights holder simply placed a link to purchase the song under my video. (It was a Frank Sinatra Song)

Your mileage may vary..

From what I understand, SC sues for the use of it's logo, and on an audio recording.....it's hard to make out.... ....plus there are other karaoke brands to use, and you can also purchase a custom made track........last time I checked, the minimum Harry sells is a 500 copy package per song.

Yes sir he does, When I was doing band recordings and mastering, I had to purchase a 10 500 song packs. Each cd had 10 songs on it. WOW was that fun. But sold ever one of them, so made my money back plus some profit.

I recently asked myself the same question, so here's the answer from Zoom

You’d need clearance from two parties for each song:

1) The record company (that’s us if you’re using our tracks)
2) The music publisher that controls the publishing rights to the songs you want to use (EMI, Universal, Sony etc.)

We charge a fee of £30 British Pounds per tracks to use our recordings in a project. That allows you to make unlimited physical copies and also sell/stream digital copies. It doesn’t cover the publishing aspect though.
