The Scarey part to me is how many Karaoke hosts out there don't know what it is and also don't know how to fix their own Sax and Dotties Media Plug in's when it's not working. I shouldn't have done ti but I've fixed most of the ones here in Flint. cueball wrote: As a Singer, when did you first become aware that such a device existed? How dependent have you become on the use of a Key Changer? Only when I'm singing something I really know is too High Like Some Styx or Journey Songs. cueball wrote: About 6 months after becoming a Regular at this place, one of the Hostesses made me aware of the Key Changer. She had suggested that I might feel a little more comfortable if I take the Key Down 1 the next time I sing that song ("Cold As Ice" by Foreigner). Well, a few days later, I tried that, and it did make me feel like I wasn't straining to sing it. Prior to that, I was never aware that you could have the Key Changed for a song before you start singing it. The KJ at the first show I went to never made any type of announcements regarding this, and neither did the Hosts or Hostesses at this new show I was going to. So, all told, I wasn't aware of this until well into 1 year of my going out for Karaoke. TO ME That was the sign of a poor host. The host should have Karaoke reques slips with such information on it. "Singer Name" "Song Title" "Artist" "Version" "Key +/-" Then if the Host doesn't have the version requested. They should seek out that customer and help them find an acceptable version. Basic customer service. cueball wrote: After about 1 year of going out to Karaoke shows, I found a Karaoke Store in the City. I started to buy discs for myself, and shortly thereafter, purchased a portable machine. When I was making the purchase, the guy also sold me on getting a Key Changer. He said that, "A Key Changer is a necessity for the Serious Karaoke Singer." I bought it, and as I started to expand my personal library, I was actually surprised at how many songs I needed to change the key for. As for how often I make use of a Key Change, it all depends on what song I am singing. I have well over 100 songs that I personally like to sing when going out, and I would say that there are at least 20 of those songs where I need to alter the key (anywhere from up/down 1 to up/down 5). This has me wondering did you find a key changer that doesn't slow down the music also? I've never heard of one. Thus I usually only go down one key two seems to slow it down too much. But, Some songs can be pulled off. 5 down doesn't that really slow down the music?

As a singer I prefer to keep the song in the original key and sing higher or lower if I can manage it.
I hate key changers but i will use it if I have to.
As a former karaoke host, well I am there to please the singer, my personal preferences don't matter as much

With the exception of a couple DJ turned karaoke players (ie Numark) every machine or software I've used had independent key controllers that digitally changed the key without speeding up or slowing down to achieve the result. 5 keys up or down will keep the music the same speed on my current Pioneer & JVC machines & MTU Hoster software. When I also played customer karaoke tapes, I could plug my tape player into the Pioneer AUX inputs & change the key on tapes as well without affecting the speed as well.

I hate key changers but i will use it if I have to. I feel the same way, however, I know the limitations of my voice & there are songs I like to sing that I would never be able to hit in normal key, so down they go. Even pro vocalists will often drop the key of many songs when they sing live.

Thought I'd bring this up on this thread, as I never got an answer on another. Several times, when at a PC show where the KJ doesn't list mfrs., I have asked that my own disc be used. They complied, but were unable to keychange my discs.
What is the cause of this? The software? The fact that it's a disc - though played in the PC's hard drive- or a KJ who doesn't know what they are doing?
Keep in mind my Luddite self. I should mention that when I DID use a PC for house parties, I used the ORIGINAL PC DJ/KJ RED, and had no problems, even way back then.
So, WTF?

Really what program changes keys without slowing down the Music. Every one I've tested slows the music slightly when moving it down. I'd like to check that out.

It's an illusion that it is slowing or speeding. Back in the day when you slowed down a tape or record or even some of the dj cd players - this not only changed the speed but also lowered the key. This is what you think you still hear (the illusion) with todays software that have digital key changers built in, your brain is trained that if the key is changed it must be sped or slowed. digital key changers are not speed controlled and does not speed/slow the songs when adjusted. MTU Hoster Karma Compuhost All have key change without changing speed. I'm sure there are others, these are the main 3 I keep up with.
If you don't believe this, you can always buy an external key changer that goes inline your computer (player) and mixer - change the key, there is no way it can change the speed of the actual playing song since it's just digitally adjusting the signal only, not the actual media.

So, WTF? I would say either they don't want to mess with it, the software don't come with it or they are idiots & don't know how their software works. Now I don't know if other programs can change key playing discs, I do know that Hoster does.

I have also been to shows where the KJ was computer based, and I gave them my personal discs to play from. I have even witnessed where the KJ did my specified key-change, yet I did not hear any difference during the playing of my selection. Now, before you say that a key-change of up 1 or down 1 might not be noticeable to you, I am talking about songs like "Bring Him Home" (on PS 1016), where I take it up 3 on the key-changer, and "Good Morning Baltimore" (on JT 328), where I take it up 5. You better believe that when the key is changed by that much of a margin, you're gonna hear it. So, what is it that the KJ is doing wrong, where he is doing my Key-Change request, and yet nothing is happening?

Lonman, Yeah you're correct it doesn't change the speed. At least in Compuhost. I played around with the speed also. It sure seemed like it slowed down when I was singing at bars and asked for a key change. They where using Sax and Dotties. I'll have a friend check that out. Thanks
