I am strictly amateur but I have thought of this. I have the following inserted at the front of any songbook I use. I'd be happy to hear your opinions.

Welcome to Kirkcaldy Karaoke and I hope you have a good time. But, to ensure that EVERYONE enjoys the karaoke experience, please adhere to the following guidelines.

Song Books
There are two books. Each book contains the same songs. One book list the songs by Artist while the other lists them by Song Title. Both books have a Late Additions section at the back.

Request Slips
Feel free to submit as many request slips as you like. But each singer will be invited to sing in strict rotation. So if you submit four song requests, you will find them spaced out over the session. If you submit ten…the show will probably end before you get a chance to do them all.

Key Change
Any song can have its key altered, up or down, to suit the singer. The music Tempo will not change as a result. Don't strain for that high note, ask your host to adjust the key before the music starts or mark the appropriate area on the request slip. UP 2 means take the song higher by 2 semitones, DOWN 3 means take it down 3 semitones. If you're not sure, ask your host. He doesn't bite.

Tempo Change
Less common than a Key Change but still available. I can alter the Tempo of the music if you want it played faster or slower. Just ask. And, no, you won't sound like a chipmunk, you voice will be unaffected. Neither will the pitch of the music change with a change in tempo.

Wait Your Turn
Please submit using one name only during the course of the evening. You might think it clever to submit one request under your own name and another under Mickey Mouse. Yes, that will probably get you invited that one extra time. But it will be just that; ONE extra time. Your karaoke host will notice and it's very likely your future request slips will be pushed back in the queue in the interests of fairness. Some hosts have even been known to bin these people's slips for the rest of the evening. So, please be fair.

Audience Participation
We all like to think we could be the next Elvis or Lady Gag if only…
But it takes a bit of guts to get up there and sing in front of a bunch of strangers. Good or Bad, please applaud EVERY performer. You'd like them to applaud you when it's your turn, wouldn't you?

Respect The Equipment
Your host is not a millionaire and good microphones are expensive. Please do not:
• Blow into or tap the microphone
• Swing or dangle the microphone by its cable
If you want to check the microphone is working, speak into it. "One two" is common.

Can't Find Your Song?
Ask your host if he can get it for you in time for the next session. The chances are he can.

Good post. I used to do that when I used binders with sheet sleeves.

Good topics, but too long to be effective.

Singers will not take the time to read through all of it.

Limit it to 1 or 2 sentences for each topic and print it in larger fonts.

Make it like reading a little kids book....big, short and to the point.

Good stuff.

Make it visual. Use your imagination. All kinds of crazy clip art online and you can photo shop it and do crazy stuff on excel.

Short and to the point is right. The first page of my book has a cartoon of a very unattractive lady. It says: "The person in charge of requests is Hellen Waite. If you want to be moved up in the rotation, just go to Hellen Waite".

I used to do this, but found that less than 5% actually read them. They just make you feel better.

I took mine out years ago.

I use pictures in my books.

Here is a link to the PDF document I use for my books. All of these pages are at the front and laminated.

I use those same awesome graphics (don't spit, etc) but put them up on the big screen between songs.
