Virtual DJ says it gets its karaoke subscription from "MegaHits (formerly Chartbusters) and Sunfly" (the latter not available as of yet). I have not heard of any mention of Virtual DJ being part of the Digitrax family, much less who MegaHits is, in relation to Chartbuster. Any thoughts???

A lot cheaper than anything else out there - no chance of being sued for something stupid, it sounds like a no-brainer if you want to jump into the karaoke business for no money down. Sort of make me feel stupid for having a pile of discs in my garage....

Good question. Think I'll try to chase that down...

I am still amazed that this can remain such a mystery...

Your topic reminded me of the scene "Airplane", when L. Bridges shows a newspaper headline to a controller....

MegaHitz & All Hits - same manu. I have a few MH, (got it since the 90’s) pretty decent & some tracks not covered by other manus such as: she’s a bad mama-jama by carl carlton, tender years by john cafferty, other tracks are now just being released by others: nobody but me by human beinz & physical attraction by Madonna (kv, sbi).

Hard to believe the part about “MegaHits (formerly Chartbuster)”. (i'm guessing) I think - either mh/ah were cb subsidiary at one time or another, or a good marketing ploy; take advantage of the brand name. :)

Marketing ploy is what i'm thinking, I don't recall Chartbuster being related in any way to MegaHits (I have a few of those discs as well from the early 90's and yes they were All Hits - along with several others including SGB).
Although CB version of Simple Man (Lynyrd Skynyrd) is the exact same music as SGB, so who knows!

I appreciate the "guesstimate", but obviously this is something out of the blue. Gretchen with Digitrax and formerly with Chartbuster has NO clue what is up with this situation, and is checking on it. Curiosity is DEFINITELY slow torturing THIS cat.....

I haven't posted in a very long time, but still read the forum regularly.....thought I might be able to add to this.

If I recall correctly, I could've sworn there was a similar knockoff-ish sounding brand a few years back that was called "Chartbusters", "Karaoke Chartbusters", or something along those lines (with an "s" at the end of it)....and was totally unrelated to the actual Chartbuster Karaoke that everyone is familiar with. Thought I saw them in the music section at Wal-mart (or someplace similar), if my memory is right. That might be the "Chartbusters" that Virtual DJ was referring to on their site. Also, not sure if it's the same company I'm thinking of, but if you Google "Karaoke Chartbusters (not Chartbuster) Images" it'll show some pics of the brand that they might be using.

Hope that helps some :)

They say on the Virtual DJ site that they have around 20,000 tracks (twenty thousand)...from what I have been able to gather, there aren't but a couple of labels that have anywhere near that many tracks...surely some relatively unknown label like the ones mentioned do not have anywhere near that total...

Whoops, you're right. I read that wrong on their site when I saw it the first time. I was thinking that the 20,000 number was also counting the Sunfly collection (18,000+ tracks, but that includes dupes) that they were talking about adding soon. That's what I get for reading too fast :? . Bit of a mystery for sure if that's the case.

This may not mean anything in the context of what we're talking about, but I did notice that they had some Chartbuster (& Sound Choice) track listings when you go to the Grooveshark site link....but that's on the "Audio Plan", not the "Karaoke Plan".

Just doing some more reading, and discovered that you apparently can download a HOME version of Virtual DJ, and view 30 seconds of any karaoke video...perhaps some of you folks that are well versed in the individual idiosyncrasies of tracks can do that and determine if they are as suspected: direct imports or derivatives of CB/DT tracks...at least that much would be known...

Here is something I found out: I spent some time with a fellow at a local music store that used to sell Chartbuster. He acquired the Home Version of Virtual DJ and he was able to view 30 second snippets of karaoke tracks. After viewing 10 or so, he was convinced that these tracks were, in his words, "reworked Chartbuster tracks", because of the similarity in font style--although he said the background colors were different, red instead of blue--and the music was the same...is it possible that some deal was made with Virtual DJ without the knowledge of the Digitrax folks that frequent this forum???

Here is a bit more: A support representative from Atomix/Virtual DJ thinks that this offering, although just going online in May of this year, has actually been in the works for a number of months, maybe even going back to the time before Chartbuster closed its doors, and that it took all this time to get their software ready for it. If these statements are true, then there are a number of conclusions one could come to as to how this product became one of their offerings.......and......GO!!!

Result google search / Synopsis: Atomix Productions/Virtual dj was founded in France in 2000 by Stephane Clavel, former student from the French "Ecole Polytechnique" Atomix Productions will then grow up in 2002 with Atomix Productions USA, created to supervise the North American market, and then again in 2007 with VolnaTech, Ukraine created to handle additional development.

In 2001, Atomix Productions partnered with eJay AG then Empire Interactive for the distribution of its general consumer software, in 2003 with ColorSonic / SES Giraudon for the installation of its professional systems, and in 2006 with Numark Industries for the distribution of its pro DJ softwares. http://www.virtualdj.com/atomixproductions/

Their contact office is located in Los Angeles, CA. Quote from site: “Atomix Productions Inc had $1,000,000 in estimated annual revenue (Actual data)". Are they offering MegaHits as reworked CB tracks? Who knows? I am no lawyer but I hope they're in compliance with fair game play because I think from legal standpoint 1M annual revenue - - - that’s rich tapping resource right there.  http://companies.findthecompany.com/l/1 ... OK. I haven't been lucky in my info gathering, so I thought I'd bring it here.

Both Mega-Touch and Mega-Hits are internet jukebox (regular music) companies.

I watched a "Bar Rescue" that showed a self-updating internet karaoke jukebox. I, being me, made a connection- which at this point only exists in my brain.

I have tried contacting Jon Taffer's folks to find out what company that is- of course, with no answer.

If anyone here is better equipped and inclined to follow that train of thought, maybe they could learn something that I can't.

So the plot thickens...hmmm.

I got curious yesterday and went ahead and took the plunge to try out the free version for a "comparison study". Totally agree with Doowhatchulike's friend's assement....the audio on every track I played was a spot on match to the original CB version I compared it to. Same background singers, same key, same song times, same 7-ish second delay before the song starts, same scrolling timing, etc., etc. If those aren't reworked Chartbuster tracks, then someone has done a MASTERFUL job of finding a band and singers that sound exactly like them

Also found it very interesting that they had the CB cuts of the Alanis Morissette songs that were on the old 40004 disc, which was pulled in the early 2000's after a short production run. Even if they had worked out a deal with Chartbuster, that still seems kinda odd to have those in the "collection".
