I imagine there was a small bit of local TV media attention, but most of the attention came from Kossack's blog and the petty sparring that took place between the anti/pro Sound Choice factions in the comments.
He isn't publishing any viewer stats, but from what I can determine, he doesn't have massive traffic. What he does have appears to be from the usual suspects you can glean from the comments section.
The fact is, anywhere you go, MOST computer based karaoke is pirate karaoke. Unless you see someone using discs, you can make a safe assumption that a computer based host is very likely to be stealing their content.
Even if Sound Choice is or has been active in an area, this remains true.

I am.....and I am one of a small number in my area that is known to be legitimate. I know of a few others, but I know of many, many, many more that are not.
In my travels over the years I have seen a LOT of computer karaoke (hundreds of shows). I imagine 75% of the computer based shows I have seen are pirate shows. Maybe 10-15% are Legit. The remainder can't be easily determined. There are also hybrids - those that buy some and pirate some (still no better than a full time pirate).
I have said it before.....there are computer based host pirates that frequent these forums. If I were a pirate I would lurk and listen to Sound Choice Counsel, keep my ear to the ground, and laugh at hosts like me that pay thousands of dollars for what they get for free. What better way to stay informed?

-Chris So NOW you understand why people are getting so annoyed. You just assumed that 75% of computer hosts are pirates, and you called hybrid hosts pirates. I am a hybrid host. Most of my discs have been ripped to my computer. I own them all, though. My SC is on disc and staying that way, so that is how I play them. That makes ME a hybrid host, but NOT a pirate, since I bought all my discs, and I have receipts for all my downloads.

My definition of a hybrid host in this instance is someone who owns some or even most of the music they ripped (still have their) discs while at the same time downloading pirated tracks. My assumption is made on observation, questions I have asked, and knowing that most computer based KJ's ARE pirates. I am fortunate that I have been able to travel across the US pretty extensively in the last 10 years. I go to karaoke as often as possible. I try to go to a different show every time I go just for the diversity of it. I have seen a lot of pirate hosts. I have spoken to hosts that admit they pirate. I see hosts with open iRC connections downloading requests at shows. I have also seen hosts that have cases of discs as backup in case their PC dies. There are a few local hosts that also leverage iCroons.com as I do. It is not only obvious, but also fairly easy for someone to determine rather quickly if a host is pirating or not. It sucks that legitimate, computer based karaoke hosts are defaulted to being pirates. But that is the nature of how computer karaoke has played out. I am personally fine with it because I know, my venues, know, the karaoke companies know, and my singers know that I pay for my music. It isn't my job to dispel the perception to anyone except the above interested parties. -Chris

(thus the "Mr. GREEN") Sorry if you were offended. I know you are legal.

You would be surprised what you can get just by asking, "Wow! Great selection of music! Where did you get all of this stuff from?". Plus I have had some training in social engineering. Put me in a bar with people that are drinking and I can walk out with a lot of interesting information. Read this - http://www.amazon.com/Art-Deception-Con ... 191&sr=1-1Great stuff from a phenomenal social engineer. -Chris

All those who were sued in Vegas and dismissed should be assumed legal.

And all those that killed someone, got off on whatever sort of technicality\loop hole the prosecution owed all should be considered innocent. I would never say that those that got off in Vegas were not offenders. I will say that botched investigations, procedures and a general over all screw up in the SC method will lead to a bunch of these type situations.
Cheap (@$%!) litigation leads to cheap (@$%!) results. Which seems to be fine with SC as long as they can turn over some product they can't turn over any other way.

I went to a place last night that is an enormous country western nightclub. The dance floor can hold 350 line dancers. It hasn't been open very long and they started doing karaoke 2 weeks ago. A friend of mine asked the host about some newer country stuff and the host replied back with "I've only got 160,000 songs but I'm planning on getting more real soon if this gig keeps going". He didn't have a clue that what he was doing was illegal, and I bet the night club doesn't know either.
He also doesn't have a clue as to how to run a show. Pirate or not he won't be around long. They are everywhere and I believe are unstoppable. "Nothin from nothin leaves nothin", they have nothin to lose, and maybe a gig to gain while it lasts.
Back to Karaoke in Vegas.

My patience with people who are ignorantly critical of me and my client is shot with holes from excessive wear. Mr. Good has a long history of making ignorant (because of his lack of actual knowledge), derogatory comments about me and about Sound Choice. When criticism is deserved, we take it, internalize it, and reform ourselves. When it's undeserved, we say so. If that makes me "arrogant" or "condescending," so be it.

I don't think so. We are going through change at my office. Everyone wants change, they just do not want to change. You and your client are no different. Your "investigation path" and path to discovery are laughable. the amount of "effort" put into a suit is well short of inadequate. You get rewards strictly because you are right, not because you spent the time and effort to show you deserve damages. you've included people who bought your product and may OR MAY NOT have converted. You have some sort of self righteous belief that you have a right to look into others affairs based on the simple fact that they bought your client's product and may have converted it to a more user friendly format. BULL! You have a potential goldmine! as long as your employer sees the world in the paranoid form he sees it today. If not you, James, are screwed. Protect that golden pony!!
