Yes, it's just supremely horrible that we use our legal rights to encourage people who steal from us to buy from us instead.

We should definitely just let them keep stealing, because giving people an opportunity to do the right thing, to help themselves and help us out at the same time--that's practically Hitlerian in its implications.

We should instead gather all the pirates into a great big pile, light them on fire, and jump on for good measure.

I don't know why I didn't think of it before.

8) If you haven't thought of it at least some certified hosts have fantasized, I can see them bringing marshmallows to roast on the fire. No one is saying you are Nazis, just businessmen, and to stay in business you have to have a revenue source. I can see plainly why you want to fall back on sales, since the legal process is only going to net you Jim the fair retail value of the stolen product in the first place with no court costs. The legal process so far is a giant failure, since there are more illegal hosts and apparently illegal hard drives for sale at lower prices than ever before. With you court costs and sales drying up just how long can SC continue the struggle is the real question, are they headed for a CB meltdown?

Hmmmm..... go tell your local police that a KJ up the road is using illegal karaoke and see how fast they get there to arrest him. You'll be able to time them using a calendar, but I'm betting the laughter will drown out the next words you try to say. Don't be surprised if they don't go grab him and take him to jail.

SC will never bring criminal charges because they can't prove the tracks were obtained by illegal methods, nor do they want too. Nobody is required to save receipts for things they buy, especially for years. Harrington just clarified it for you, they want customers, not the elimination of piracy. Pirates = Customers.

Actually, if an investigation was done, they could prove, through the person's ISP what they have been doing, and if they have been stealing music. That is how the RIAA was catching people.

But you are right. SC is using this whole thing as a sales tool. They aren't interested in theft, piracy, or whatever you want to call it. They want GEM sales.

Exactly. Even HE sounds more like a salesman than a lawyer.

Smooth, unfortunately because you took a $75 gig, when you try to get other shows, they will only offer $75. You are lowballing yourself out of business.

8) I don 't know how things are up in Canada, but down here in the U.S.A. the average for a gig is somewhere between $100.00 to $200.00 any more than that the host really has to produce a crowd. I have worked on a salary commission basis for many years as far as venues are concerned and it has worked well for me. I get $100.00 to play and then extra depending on how much the bar makes. This is fair to the venue owner especially if we are just starting out. It gives them a feeling that we are both working towards a common goal making a success for all. The old saying of the German Army is "Victory has a hundred fathers defeat is an orphan", and when all else fails blame the karaoke host. I just made up the last part.

I have reported KJ Bill to the FBI and Local authorities several times over the past 3 years. Never even get a response from them. Admittedly, they have better things to do but it would be nice to at least get a form letter in response stating that is the case.

It's Karaoke. Nobody in authority cares. Only a one mfr and a legal company care, it's they only care so they can sell products.

Reports from a business that owns some of the pirated material on the drives in question would probably go further than an individual. No, they are not going to always stop at the drop of a hat but if the right people get the information to the right people...

Well, He kind of is. Keep in mind that Jim is not just a legal rep working for a set fee. His earnings, per his own statements, are connected to the income he brings in to SC. Thus, he's more of a "partner" - or at least a salesman- than the normal fee-based legal counsel.

As for under-cutters. I'd love to think that they all bite, are track thieves, etc...

Just a rather unique example: I know a disc based host. He bought a JFJ pro re-surfacer, then made the rounds to Goodwill and thrift type stores, yard sales, used racks in music stores, etc..., and built a disc library of over 4500 tracks. Not huge, but serviceable. The son of a seacook also happens to be a good host- and charges $89 per night ( he says it looks better than $90).

Sometimes things just are what they are.

Actually I believe that people were being caught not by downloading but by leaving the music on their computer to be uploaded. That is how they caught them not so much for the downloading but the re-sharing of it.

I have found CDG's at yard sales, thrift shops and pawn shops (mostly junk brands) we even have 1 pawn shop about an hour from here that advertises they buy and sell CDG's...so it is not only NJ or Fantasyland....but I have never found a single disc I wanted to purchase.

Craigslist is a good source for bulk buys upon occasion however

8) I had a lady who was a friend of my wife give us a couple hundred discs her husband had after he died since she knew I was a collector, she said they were taking up space. I found the space, all were in very good condition.

I have looked every time I go out to these places. Several pawn shops around here have flat out told me they won't even buy karaoke discs because they have little to no resale value (which I find hard to swallow). I take it back, I did ONE time found a karaoke disc at the Goodwill, it was an old RCA 4 song multiplex for $.99 - not even anything I needed nor wanted. That was it. No yard sales, garage sales, thrift stores, etc. I do search very hard.

8) It might be hard to swallow Lonnie but if discs had any real value there would be a black market for them. We hosts like to think our investment has some value, but really only to other hosts and some collector's. If it wasn't for the need to prove a 1:1 ratio I doubt seriously if discs would have any value at all. Since the disc as a means of storing information is outdated technologically speaking. The real black market is for the hard drives with the 100,000 songs. Everything else is old fashioned, like high top shoes.
