What's wrong with singing a different song? You can't sing this one so sing another. It's a song and it's not in your key. Big deal. I cannot sing "One less bell to answer." and I've learned to live with it.

Because I am not you, I encourage people to sing and will adjust the key for their voice if needed. I would never THINK of telling someone to pick a different song due to a key change inability or refusal to do so. I have several songs I do that I need to drop a key or two. If I didn't I wouldn't have a whole lot of songs that i'd enjoy singing, maybe some moldie oldies tunes or some old time country - which is neither my style nor taste. I used to try to push my voice now I adjust the song to fit it! If that is your choice not to try songs out of your range just because it may not sound as good as the original key, kind of sad that you are missing out on probably alot of fun songs - in this respect, the 'it's only karaoke' saying does fit.

How are you adjusting while away from the equipment??

First and foremost- absolutely no knock from me! Ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

As for adjustments, see above. I have remotes for both my player and 2 of my four mixers ( the most used). Even if I didn't have mixer remotes, my players ( ALL with remotes) have at least some effects as well as other things I can control. One advantage over PCs.

Thank you Lon, and well put.

Bottom line: The customer- and whatever keeps them coming in- comes first.

Effects from the players? How do you control the vocal effects from the players unless you are plugging the mics into the players????

Lon, EE, ET, and AT, remember? Except for ONE mixer - too old to modify, but too good to give up- I have installed remote modules of my design that work beautifully. No, they don't move the sliders, but rather work on the chips.

Many key changers work well, especially if the person running sound knows what they're doing.

I want to add that I don't understand why some people feel negatively about key changes. Not only do pro singers(and smart singers!) often ask for and employ key changes, but so do singers who don't "need" to.

I have a freakish range, so do not "need" key changes generally, but I use and ask for key changes.I can't sing Mariah Carey's "Someday" in the original key, because the final note is 2 notes above my top note. Dropped, I can manage it.I'd love for someone to tell me I suck for needing to drop the key .

My point in bringing it up is that it doesn't matter if you have a billion octaves or one octave , whatever you've got, chances are you'll find a song that taxes or extends beyond your range. If a key changer can make it singable,or more singable, why not?To criticize someone for it makes no sense.

I won't sing a song I have to take up or down more than 1 key. Some are comfortable with 2, but the music just doesn't sound right to me.

My voice changed a lot over the years I was singing. It's a physical fact that the longer you sing, and the older you get, the thicker your vocal chords get, which lowers your voice. By the time I quit singing, I couldn't sing any of the high notes I used to sing.

Skeptic that I am, I would be very interested to know more about this. What chips are you using and what functions do they allow you to control from afar using the players infrared remote? You state "effects". Are you doing actual effects processing or simply routing audio through the players mic circuits?

In my 2 biggest setups, I use sound boards and nothing has been done. But in my 2000 and 1500 currently running I use modified amp/mixers, not sound boards, and the modules are routed through them, the exception being micro mixers in line with one mic that are sometimes for the um, "less talented" singers which cannot be remotely controlled, but they are used so rarely as to make this almost a moot point. I would also add that the mixer/amp on my smallest ( modified up to 750W) system actually CAME from the factory with the remote- No mod necessary.

As for design details- not for public consumption. I know that you have a similar background- though I think more software oriented if I'm not mistaken. These designs are not exactly rocket science, and if you thought about it, I believe you could do the same.

The bottom line is, I can wander and greet and still adjust. Another advantage is adjusting while setting up the room.

I understand that, but what are you adjusting via this setup. Volume? EQ? Effects?
