Hi, I have a Pioneer v880 that looks like




Is there something that makes the reader of the Laser disc better so that it can read?

It doesn't read that well, any ways to improve it?

probably just time to replace the laser pickup...

Sorry im not tech smart or Karaoke smart but what do you mean replacing?

While it MAY be time to replace the laser pickup, one might consider the laser discs themselves, which are well aged. It could be that the discs themselves are the problem. Have you tested them on other machines?

I don't use the v880 just for Laser discs. I use my CDG and Laser discs on it. I have problems playing CDG's with bad quality. Like the older Pop Hits Monthly, I have problems with it. Or burnt CDG's I have problems with it also.

Some laser machines work better than others, and Im guessing its the laser reading?

Or is there anyway to clean the lens reader?

Time to replace with...... a PC.

Smoke-filled room & static charge also leaves a little film on it & can affect performance - that would require 'wet' cleaning. I normally use q-tip with slight amount of windex, rub the lens gently, repeat & dry. Do not touch the lens housing. If the problem still exists, most likely you will need to replace the laser pick-up. Years back when I had my Pioneer cld 303t I found out that you cannot repair that optical pickup. This was according to the geek tech. He said it requires replacement, then recalibration, aligned & sync with the player or it will not work properly. Expensive! Not worth fixing imo. What would be the cheaper & economical recourse? I just bought another used functional ld player @ ebay. Good luck!

Have you always had this problem, or is this a recent development? You might need the Optical Lens Assembly replaced if you're having trouble reading all of the discs you load. Other than that, Brian's suggestion of a Lens Cleaning is a good idea to try first.

and yes cleaning the lens is the first thing you should try, but forget the cleaning disc's.
they suck!!!!!!

take a q-tip and a little isoprophyl alcohol and clean the laser manually, here is a youtube video to show you how, concept is the same for cleaning the laser so just open you v880 and clean the laser lens the same way:



also in the 1st link are some pictures, on the ribbon cable there is a small trim pot adjustment for laser strength, you can try tweaking this a little, but if the laser is too far gone it won't help.

I've also had a couple pioneer's that the ribbon cable that goes from the laser assm. to the motherboard is just bad causing the same issues, so if you decide to replace the laser then replace the ribbon cable also.

If you don't feel up to tackling the job yourself, Bayview Electronics in Olympia, WA specializes in old Pioneer repair. You can email them what is happening and they are very nice about giving you a guess as to what the problem probably is and how much it would be to fix it.

This is about the ONLY place that does laserdisc service - but they do a really good job at it. They've been servicing and cleaning my machines for years. Nice that I can just drive up there though instead of shipping it.
To the OP! If your machine has NEVER been cleaned & isn't reading cdg's or burns very good, get it cleaned! I have that same machine and it's never even hiccup'd a graphic on cdg's or burned discs - UNLESS the laser was dirty.

Make sure you CLEAN each disk COMPLETELY of any smudges fingerprints or other gunk accumulated on the disc surface before inserting into the machine. MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. May just be dirty discs.

I've been using these discs since early 90s and some of them don't have scratches on it. But I have a problem with few players where some play and some don't play.

I tried certain laser cleaners, but never noticed the difference. Is the link the laser cleaner better?

cleaning disc's don't work very good......

the disc spins in one direction pushing debris to one side of the laser, and some lenses are beveled and have a raised edge circling the edge of the lens.

so they are kind of pointless, do the q-tip and alcohol as I suggested, it's pretty easy and won't cost you $50 bucks.....

Thanks I'll look into it. Money like $50.00 and $100.00 is not really a big problem for me, as this is a business where I have to make sure that I get the best results to fix it, so that I don't get interfered during business time. I'll look at the Qtip and also the laserdisc url for the WA.
