Autotune is just a tool just like the difference between a hand saw and a power saw.
A master craftsman could build a house with hand tools but with power tools he can get the same quality, in a heck of a lot less time.

-James I am pretty sure you just compared apples to tadpoles. Hand Saw / Power Saw do the same thing. One is just more efficient. Autotune does things that are impossible for the human voice to accomplish. Period. It is a tool though and for a good singer having a bad day, I find it's use to be more than acceptable. But when it gets used to make crappy singers sound acceptable, or to make voices sound like something they can't do in real life or ever replicate for a live show, then I have issues with it. When a "tool" comes along that trivializes the abilities of truly talented people, it is no longer a tool. -Chris

Otherwise, why do you bother to buy the best sound equipment that you can afford for your business. If it doesn't matter, why not just buy a pair of radio shack speakers and be done with it. In fact, why use a compressor at all? Why use sound effects? I think you get my point -James

It benefits no singer to twist, alter, modify, inflate, and corrupt their natural singing ability (or lack thereof) into something they can never, ever replicate without the assistance of an array of electronics. -Chris

Furthermore, my number one priority is to get as many people to come to the venue and spend as much money as possible.
Any karaoke host who thinks this isn't their number one priority is fooling themselves.

-Chris By that measure, though--a performing artist's number one priority is to sell records and get air play and advertising revenue. There's no "actually sings well" requirement for music.

My initial reply would have been a heart "HELL YEAH!"- but that would have been directed to professional recording stars who make their money selling something that they may not have. A voice. THEN it would be a rip-off.
However, all is fair in love and karaoke. A singer that feels he/she sounds best at MY show will prefer to sing at MY show- bringing more money into MY venue, which is MY job.
We already use what effects we have to make each singer sound their best. Echo/delay for depth if required, tone adjustment, different microphones. Heck, I have a Luddite version of autotune: One of my mics is run through a mini-board with it's own effects including vocal keychange ( no mention of this to the singer, of course) for the seriously talent-challenged.
It's not a rip-off for karaoke if you remember that karaoke is still just for fun.
However, if the OP was directed to professional singers ( like professional athletes) then I agree 100%

If I felt that the "artists" that use Autotune for everything were professionals, then yes, it would be directed at them. What I really feel they are is gimmicky, lackluster singers that have no other means of producing content then by producing something that is impossible to recreate outside of a studio.
No autotune at my shows ever for fun/gimmicky stuff. May change my mind sometime, but for now I am completely against it.

I had a guy last year at Christmas bring in an effects unit with a mic attached to it, and asked me if he could hook into my board. I looked at it and said "sure, why not". It was a hoot because it produced the chipmunk voice PERFECTLY. When you sang your could hear your voice coming out of your mouth, but it was totally different than was coming out of the floor monitors and house. Everyone loved it.
Like has been stated for professionals, if it is for "effect" go for it...... if it is because you can't sing.... leave it at home and find another career. Sooner or later they will find out you can't sing.

My Vocopro mixer has the ability to do that as well as lower the voice to a devil sounding voice. I wouldn't mind doing things like that on occasion and used when I used that board at my very first karaoke venue.

This post got my curiosity going so I went out and bought one. I have to say I like the 'tone' feature quite a bit, but I'm wondering if you have to feed the music thru the usb connection because even when you crank the 'correction' knob all the way to the right, I can't hear any descernable difference. -James
