From time to time, shows have mic stands available for the singers (I used to have one when I ran shows). What's your opinion? Do you like using a mic stand to sing?

I have mic stands at every show. For me it is a bit of a crutch and I know other singers at my shows feel the same way. There are some that take the mic off the stand and move around and others that leave the mic in place and plant themselves at the mic stand.

I prefer shows that give the option of a mic stand over those that just have the mics in a clip on the tv stand. So I also offer mic stands at my shows.

They have options. 2 mic stands: Shure Super55 & Lampifier Vocal or handheld wireless: shure beta58 & line6 xd-v75.

I put out one mic stand and a flat bar stool to either sit on or place their drink on while singing.

Some have a "rule" about no drinks on stage but i rarely have any problems and it makes the singers more comfortable.

Putting a mic anywhere but on a stand is a bad habit to get into. Stands are made to hold mics, it makes them easier to keep track of, and keeps them out of harms way. Any mic is far less likely to get damaged when on a decent stand with proper adapter. If you paid $15 for your mic, who cares, put it wherever. But the cost of a GREAT stand is less than the cost of an adequate mic. If you don't want the stand during your performance, don't use it, even move it aside. (see cost analysis above)

Personally, I don't want to put anything that's been on a barstool near my mouth.

who puts a mic on a bar stool?
Jasaoke, my mics come back to me and get sanitized before going to the next singer (why i usually rotate 2 or 3 mics. one singing, one just back, another sanitized and going to the next singer).
if you just let a nights worth of people come spit into your mics and do not clean it between singers you have other issues you need to deal with.

i take a stand with me, but usually use it for someone with problems (i have 3 different paraplegic singers at the private clubs) but not much more. if there is one there when i sing somewhere i will use it as a prop, but if not, good for me as well.

At my Tues night gig, I have to have a mic stand there because they are so used to it. My other gigs, I don't give them a mic stand.

The mic stand I use is really cool though. It is heavy duty and easily adjustable. All you have to do is squeeze the handle to adjust the height of the stand. What amazes me is how many people STILL can't seem to adjust the height even after I have showed them how several times. They always want to grab the stand and start twisting it like a conventional stand.

Or some people just grab the stand and try to force it up or down without squeezing the handle. Grrrrrrr.. that gets on my last nerve when they do that.

And then I have other people, mostly ladies, who struggle with putting the mic back in the mic holder on the stand when the song is over.

This is why I don't like to use mic stands at my gigs, however; I always have the stand in my vehicle so if anyone ever asks if I have a mic stand, I say yes and then go get it out of my vehicle. It's very rare that they ask me for a stand though.

I have the same mic stand and the same problem! Sometimes if the crowd is right and I see someone struggling to raise or lower the stand, I'll get on my mic and say "Just squeeze it and go like this!" and then make that, uh, "familiar motion". Always gets a laugh!

Always have at least one mic stand available for singers (sometimes two). The only problem for me is I have protective covers that slip over my shure mics that cover the on/off switch so people cant keep turning them on and off. While it certainly works as advertised, it creates a problem for folks replacing the mic after they sing. With the piece around the mic you have to snap it into place instead of sliding it down, etc. No matter how many times I explain it thruout the night about half the people have difficulty putting it back into the clip.

I bring one to my shows. Some people enjoy them and even make comments that they appreciate us having them. I too feel the need to disinfect the mics often during the show, and I admit the ones on the stands do not get cleaned as often as the cordless ones just because its not handed back to me etc

I posted this because 90% of the shows in my area (South Western Ohio) have no mic stands. Out of those, only 10% have audience monitors.
Although the mic stand is debatable (Like I said, I had one when I ran shows), KJ's should always have screens for the audience to follow along. One bar I walked into didn't even have a singer's monitor, so the singer had to turn their back to the audience to see the only TV broadcasting lyrics.
SWO is a deplorable mess when it come to 'raoke.

If these are Shure Wireless mics there is a trick you can do to temporarily lockout the switch so it doesnt function. On initial power up keep holding down the button until the LED flashes rapidly. Now the switch is locked out and the only way to turn itoff is to pull the batteries. Essential if you use Shure wireless mics. Amazing what you learn when you read the manual!

If not a stand, then what do you do with your mics?

Hold them all night? Keep them on your mixer/other equipment? A table?

The point I was trying to make before is that I don't understand how you can use mics withOUT a stand. What happens to the mic when it's not in use? Why would you not use a stand?

Like i've witnessed, alot of shows use tv stands that have mic clips built in to hold the mics when not in use.

Collect them after each song to clean them whilst setting them on either your table or putting them in the spaces between your rig/equipment...?

I've seen kjs have singers put the vocopro wireless mic back into the briefcase they came in that was sitting on a table next to the singer screen.

I personally collect them after every song while thanking the singer(s) and cleaning them with WET ONES that i carry around. The extra mics go in a slide tray in my oddysey rack.

I ALSO have a mic stand just in case people want to use the guitar or piano or sax prop i set out to free their hands.
