A seminar based on the following:

Selling a weekly karaoke show to a venue

Selling a weekly karaoke show to a venue is a far different sale then selling DJ service to a bride and groom. If you are already in the karaoke business you know that it’s not the same sale as 5 or 10 years ago. Times have changed, with more competition than ever before and the entire way marketing has been turned on its ear, we need a new way to approach and close…

So come join Robby Ellicson as he teaches us The TEN Commandments of Selling Karaoke. These Ten Commandments not only streamline the sales process they are designed to sell shows that are long term. Also they answer most of the standard objections before they are even asked.

Do the Ten Commandments work every time? No, of course not, but almost 29,000 ( yes thousand) people attended Robby’s shows in 2012 and his company’s projection for the total number of karaoke shows for 2014 is between 800 and 1000 shows – that’s 16-21 shows per week. The average show pays above the norm also. So if you’re just getting your feet wet in the karaoke world or you’d like to add one or two more shows a week, or if you’re going from a single rig to a multi op, come join us.

So who is Robby Ellicson and why haven’t I heard of him? Well, he’s from Milwaukee ( and that will probably answer why you haven’t heard of him) and his professional hosting name is Robby Pinstripes ( but again ,if you haven’t been to Milwaukee that might not help). He did his first karaoke gig in 1989 (on 8 tracks!) In 2000 he started The Vavoom Show! , in 2001 he bought an established company (1994) Spinn Doctors Entertainment and Events. He competes with about 50 other companies in his area and his company’s shows regularly hold 4-6 spots in local ‘top ten lists’ out of around 200 published shows a week in the Milwaukee area. He also owns Midwest Karaoke League – a competitive team based social league. Lastly, he is the voice behind Karaoke Gold Mine and all of its techniques and innovations in regular and alternative karaoke.

yes, but it would have to be a webinar it's the only way I could do it with my day job i'm stuck here.

by day i'm a mild manor Casino Surveillance Manager, by weekend night I am Doctor Karaoke. and "I can prescribe the right song for you."

Well, I don't know about ALL of us. The speaker's history is similar to mine ( I started with cassettes and lyric sheets), and many here have similar histories.

However, this would certainly be useful to new or currently struggling hosts, and I would consider it a very strong part of the curriculum.

Now you KNOW my curiosity is going to make me look for "Bobby Pinstripes" on line.... :lol: :D

If your a decent host, the most important thing is to know your customer. Lots of KJs try to sell karaoke to venues where it just won't work, sometimes even knowing, deep down inside, it won't work at the place. Don't be, what I like to call Stubborn Stupid....... trust your gut, and don't waste your time trying to sell such places/owners/managers. Also, cheap owners(you can tell right away), and they like you to try it for a few shows, where you do it for free, or very little, and will tell you bye, as soon as the free service doesn't pack the place immediately. Take a good look at the place, and the people that hang out there.....stop for a drink a few times on different nights of the week, before you make a move on the place. :lol: Keeping the gig is another topic(topics on here have covered both in the past).....

Hi ,
I just thought I'd drop in and tell the story regarding the Ten Commandments of Selling Karaoke. About years ago I was a bit frustrated with my karaoke business - I'd been in the industry for a long time and I had long since seemed to level out, and I had leveled out quickly. Worse was I couldn't get to my goal of ten shows a week, I'd get up a around 7 or 8 and something always seemed to happen - I'd lose a show within a week or two of a new one starting.

We had four shows that had been around for a number of years and then three or four on top that like spinning plates at a circus. I began to compare the long term shows to the 'flings' and tried to analyze the difference. There were basically no differences upon how the shows were run ect. So finally after awhile the light went on that it wasn't about the show itself , but about how the relationship with the venue started. It came down to the sale!

I'd been selling shows the same way for years- the way I'd been taught years earlier by the first DJ company I worked for. So while the world had changed I had not - or at least , my techniques had not kept up with the times. So I studied - I read books, I went to seminars, I dug through the internet... and in six monthes I developed the Ten Commandments of Selling Karaoke.

They've worked very well for us, in addition to being on track to tripling the number of weekly shows we do in a 2 year period. They've lead us to tweeking our business here and there in almost every aspect - some by choice, some do to growth.

The question is will they work for you? Honestly I don't think that they will work for everyone. The techniques can be time consuming, and alot of people will have to adjust their mindset a bit, and lastly I don't think everyone has the same drive to succeed that I do. But for the right person it can make a pretty significant impact on their business.

Lastly I'm sorry I can't share the actual ten commandments here, but I am planning on sharing them with some like minded people in Las Vegas at the Mobile Beat convention.

It depends on your market(where you live), the KJ, but big time dependent on where you live.......no one size fits all......

Do you have a television show immediately after Jimmy Swaggart on Sunday morning? I think I've heard this message before. More "Hope & Change" on the horizon.

Probably would not be helpful for me.

1. It would have to be a webinar, as I don't have the time nor extra $$$ lying around to attend a seminar unless it happens in my area.

2. There are only about 12 or so venues (bars) that could have karaoke in my "area" Out of those 12, four of them are eliminated because they are complete dumps, and 2 others I will not do because I would be competing with myself/venues where I already host. So I have 6 left to chose from, and I already host at 2 of those. That leaves 4 venues. 1 of those has a pirate multi-rigger hosting. One other is closed during the winter, and I occasional host there during the summer (1-3 times). So that leaves me ONE venue I could get another gig at. I highly doubt that the 10 commandments would help me.

But if it were a webinar/podcast, I might attend
