I've seen one that was created by Karaoke Lyrics Editor. Very basic look. Looked just like the old PHM tracks. Same colors. Same Fonts. Page by Page swipes instead of line by line overwrite swipes. I'll buy their tracks if they put out songs that I can't get elsewhere but I'll keep using Karaoke Builder Studio and Power Karaoke to make my CD+G files. After all; It's really about the music.

A friend of mine would like a karaoke audio track of the song "If I Fall" by Trace Adkins. I'm sure that he would buy that song from anyone who made it first. I've already made the song for him using a track with the vovals removed but he would much rather have a better track.

Taking requests Bastiat?

I suggested exactly this business idea to him in a private conversation!

No I don't have any special hotline to Bastiat.....;)

How in the hell did ASCAP audit your files? They have no right whatsoever to do that. If they did that it is because you allowed it. ASCAP is responsible for the venues paying their fees to the rights holder, not to see if you own your music. I call bullsh!t on this statement.

because at the time I was playing from backup's and not using my originals.

Would be nice if they uploaded a "demo" video of the final output of Beethoven, maybe even a tutorial.

What I am looking forward to is seeing if I can actually figure it out properly. How the heck is it supposed to handle things like instrumental breaks, verses etc without any kind of timing information.

there must be a piece of information I am missing. Otherwise you would be able to take any regular song and run it thru Beethoven to try and produce a set of lyrics, and I don't think that is what they were going for

I'm beginning to think that the MP3s that they provide have the timing information built into them somehow. The lyrics are somehow included in there as well and when you run it through Beethoven; it somehow compares the lyrics that you provide with the ones included in the karaoke track and magically creates a file that is technically created by the end user and not Pop Kits Monthly. I've seen one and aside from a very generic Looking Splash Screen with the Title on it; they look very much like your typical Pop Hits Monthly track. I, personally don't like the way they do their graphics but I'm sure that there will be plenty of people that don't have any issues with their swiping style. I might buy some tracks from them , if they release songs that I personally want to sing but I'll use Karaoke Builder Studio and Power Karaoke to make the graphics. I prefer bigger Fonts and colors that are not so close together like white and yellow. I aslo prefer the overwrite style of swiping the lyrics. My karaoke tracks are created with the visually impaired singer in mind. I can't see for crap these days so every little bit helps. Most of my songs use red white and black with all caps and a size 20 Font.

They can't put the lyrics with the mp3, you have to do that. It's more probable that Beethoven's database knows what songs are available and the timing of the swipes. You do a monthly update to the database, download the lyrics from the recommended source, http://www.azlyrics.com/, and Beethoven uses it's timing data to synchronize the downloaded lyrics to the purchased mp3.

Why do you say that? There is a huge amount of information that can be embedded in the metadata of the file using different techniques. Bastiat said the files are not containing any data so we'll see once the files are out there. But as I said in an earlier post, the concept is clearly a means to circumvent the sync license scheme entirely. I don't buy into the argument that for the past few years that they have been catering to a "niche" market thus the lack of mainstream hits on the monthly releases. Suddenly, no OSL (and required licenses) and presto we have a new disc featuring songs on the current charts? Only - we get to do the sync ourselves?

I am not sure what the legal ramifications are and Bastiat clearly feels that his exposure to litigation is negligible. I think he is sending out an invitation to both the Publishers he has tangled with in the past as well as the ones who have been willing to work with him in the present to rain a sh%t storm of legal actions on him... Whether they would be successful in court is not the issue... it would be the cost of defense that could be the problem...

Just my 2 cents

Honestly, it sounds pretty brilliant to me! The synch license is the part of the licensing that prevents music from being produced. It is also the expensive part.

What is it they would be going after PHM for, legally? You can buy kerosene and fertilizer. Does that mean the ATF will be suing Scott's Turfbuilder and Chevron if someone makes a bomb with it?

I think the true test will be if other brands follow. If other manufacturers trend the same way I'd say that many believe there is in fact nothing illegal about this plan. Not only that, the ability to make your own karaoke has been around for years. Have Karaokebuilder, MTU, PowerKaraoke et al, been sued over this process?

Time will vet this out, but it seems to me that if PHM pays their mechanical licenses to produce their own versions of the songs (compulsory) they wouldn't be on the hook for anything else. It doesn't seem they are selling a product that requires any additional licensing so this sounds legal, even if not the product for everyone.

FTR: I'm NOT a lawyer either....

I still think that their MP3s have to have some info embedded in them to automate the synchronization process. It's like they are giving you the needed ingredients and you just have to push a button or three to create the final product from those ingredients. A tutorial would be nice to see how it all works.

This would be PHM's battle to fight. Why worry about it? People have been using home made graphics at shows for years and I've never heard of anyone caring. We've all but been programmed to get a legal "jerk" any time something new comes about. That's REALLY screwed up.

I, for one, am not concerned with the legality of these tracks. I'm concerned with the quality of the swipes. I've been making my own homemade karaoke for years now and I'm all for a way to get them done in less time than it takes me now, as long as they look as good as the ones made with Karaoke Builder Studio and Power Karaoke's CD+G Creator.

So far, I'm not impressed with what I've seen from RYOK. I'm sure they will improve in time as people get more familiar with the software. I think I may buy some individual tracks from them, when that service becomes available but buying songs that I don't really want is a thing of the past for me.

So, does this mean PHM is done with CDG permanently, and all future releases will be entirely audio-only "roll your own" tracks? Or, will tracks with on screen lyrics included appear for songs that are easier to get the rights/licensing?

I just got an e-mail forwarded to me that shows a karaoke retailer that is selling the latest Pop Hits Monthly discs (1401) in CDG format and not the Roll Your Own Format. Is this true or are they just "out of the Loop" when it comes to this new release?

Here is the link: http://www.karaokestar.com/

Just got an email saying my order, placed on January 1st, has shipped :?
