Wow maybe we're uncovering something about karaoke here. The fact that people are singing the same songs every week, so often that they're claiming songs as "their song". One more reason I left public karaoke shows. If I had to listen to the same people singing the same songs every week I'd lose my mind. No wonder most bar staffs hate karaoke night. It's like Ground Hog Day.

It's a combination. Some people sing the same songs and some people take pride in how many different songs they can add to their list.

In the OP's case, it is more of a situation of one extreme case causing trouble for everyone. We have all had one or two cases like it over the years but it is not necessarily something that is constantly being perpetuated by the majority of singers.

Nothing new to people claiming a song as their own - i've heard that since I was introduced to karaoke in 89! No uncovering anything.

I have a guy that specifically asks me if he has done a song before - he doesn't want to repeat anything unless requested. He has over 500+ songs in his singer history.

Now that would be an interesting show if you had several of those singers.

Man i wish I had a couple of singers like that when I hosted. You can only listen to a song being butchered so many times before you feel like shoving your head thru a plate glass window.

I used to have a repetoire of 300 songs that I could sing well, but that list has significantly diminished as I have grown older and my range decreases

I typically do. Many people try new stuff alot. Figure out 3500+ individual song titles sung, I have 2 songs that were sung 100+ times and the rest under 100, with over half of those being 3 times or less in 2013, there isnt a ton of repeats.

is it really any different than the same 25 songs being played over and over in the jukebox? i know there are many times i will go in early and eat before setting up and will have heard the same song two or three times before i start.

Last night there was a bit of tension because a group of out of towners came in first and sat at a table where a group of regulars usually likes to sit. If looks could kill......shakes head.

I've found that the regulars who come to our shows specifically FOR our show, are usually much easier to deal with than the one-offs or the feather-rufflers. It's a little easier to get them out of their shell to sing something new; they know the scene and are more comfortable. I try to make suggestions to regulars once I know their voice/style/sense of humor.

Really cant's stand the notion of "my song".

Did they sing the regulars' songs too? that would be hilarious.

I have a guy we call 'Iron Mike, The King Of Kamakaze Karaoke".

I've been listening to him for 20 years, and I don't believe he has ever done repeat. He sometimes does a terrific job, and sometimes he go down like the Hindenburg, but he is always entertaining.

When its slow or early in the night I get shy people or set in their ways to try new ones.....tell em' its practice time or "REHEARSAL NIGHT". Usually succeeds.

Speaking for myself, I've never had a problem with someone else singing *my* song (sic), owing to the fact that
  1. I tend to go for very obscure songs that nearly no-one else knows (nothing worse than the same old to me!) and
  2. most or all of said songs I have on disc that I bring with me and therefore not listed in the KJ's songbook, so extremely unlikely for anyone else to request them.
