For more than thirty years as a wedding & corporate events DJ, I refused to sit while doing my job... I even stood during those (thankfully infrequent) long, boring speeches. Now that I'm primarily a karaoke host, I still don't sit during my shows... but lately, my back is telling me that I need to change my ways. And my feet concur.

There are a dozen or so karaoke hosts in this area, and besides me, there's only one other that I know of who stands throughout their show... All the others sit... and to be honest, it just doesn't look right to me.. Please don't get me wrong. I'm not saying a host shouldn't sit... I just don't think this host should. It wouldn't feel right to me.... I don't think I could bring myself plop down in a chair and still be able to do my job any kind of enthusiasm.

I tried using a tall bar-type stool on the weekend, but it had no back support, and although I could rest my feet a bit, it didn't seem to do much good as far as back-relief is concerned.

So, now I'm on the lookout for a decent stool that would provide back support; take the weight off my feet; and yet give the impression that I'm standing. And, it needs to be easily portable. Probably a tall order... but I have to at least try to find one.

I saw this one, but it doesn't look to have much back support, and doesn't appear to be very portable.

I guess the alternative would be to join the others and sit in a chair, but that would be a last resort... and besides, it would require re-building my console so that I could see over it.

Have any of you found a decent sit/stand stool that might fit the desired specifications?

Comfortable, good back support but I have to be honest and say it certainly isn't as portable as I would like it to be.
I bought it for wedding gigs but rarely bring it with. Most of the time when loading up I look at it and say nah.
At my karaoke gig I stand or sometimes use a hightop chair/stool

I never sit down on the job. It just doesnt look good.

I have unsteady legs so I have to sit for a little bit or I can fall. But I try to stand up as much as I can. Most times I'll take the time after adjusting the sound to move about amoungst the crowd and it cuts out the time I need to sit.

I will stand majority of any night (all night), however I have a bad back that flairs up on occasion as well & sometimes HAVE to sit on occasion or if called for the entire night, otherwise I'd be falling down in pain (had one night I could barely walk). Basic bar stool is usually enough to keep me off my feet but still high enough to stay visible to all. When I am not having issues, I am standing & dancing (or headbanging as often the case may be) around all night.

I also stand for my shows. However, this past weekend, I underestimated a drop from a ledges and bruised not one, but both of my heels. Fortunately, I am able to walk now (could not for the first two days) but standing for my shows this weekend is going to be at best very uncomfortable. I may borrow a bar stool this weekend.

What difference does it make? They're supposed to be looking at the singer. If there's someone is on stage and you're drawing attention away from them, you're doing it wrong.

I never sit-ever. I feel that de-energizes the show. However, that being said, if sitting is a medical neccesity, then you have to sit. I would suggest looking at draftmen's stools. Full support with the good ones, yet a a nice height as well.

I always have a stool or something to sit on. I stand mostly, but I also sit down when I feel tired. So I always do a combination of both at all my shows.

I mostly stand and in fact have a hard time standing still even though I am also older--if I quit moving I might freeze up. But in some venues where I am in close proximity or in direct site line with the singer I sometimes feel that standing there is a bit distracting if they are doing a slow or very serious song. So I will pull up a stool and try to sit quietly and focus on the singer.

I don't know why we come up with always and never type rules for our shows. It is good to strive for a certain mood or style but sometimes you just have to go with the flow and do what works for the moment.

I knew of one host who always sat and was actually hidden behind the proscenium for most of the show. The host would peak around to talk in between songs or would sometimes come out and harmonize when wanted but otherwise you didn't really see him. There was no energy or "connection" problem and it was a very good show.

As the OP, I was simply looking for some help with finding a decent high stool with back support that is easily portable... Something I could use that would make it appear as if I am standing, yet give relief to my back and feet.

Unfortunately, the thread seems to have degenerated into a pros & cons of sitting and standing...

Hoping we can get back on track.

I have a bad back, and bad knee, so I rotate between standing, & sitting, and sometimes have to sit in a regular chair if my back starts acting up.

well that makes at least three suggestions so far

I stood the first 18 years, but age and diabetes have grounded me for the last five. I use a bar stool which still puts me "above the table". I feel standing or sitting on the tall stool still gives the host more control of the room than hiding behind the table does. I have yet to work a show where I couldn't find a suitable chair and don't think I would spend the money to buy one.

Line of sight and the location of patron tables can remove some of the need for the higher chair. I work one almost square room where I am in a corner and actually prefer sitting low there as there is a tv directly over my head and many singers walk the room instead of staying in the setup area.

This is the one I have. It doesn't support the back at all, so I don't use it unless there is no other options. I too have a few mobility issues, so I need to sit more than I would like to admit. This stool is very portable, and folds nicely, plus it's a bit taller than a regular chair. But again, I don't use it much (only in the absence of other bar stools)

Both are nice looking chairs!!! Make sure it has good back suport.
