I stopped doing karaoke a few years ago, but still have my songs on a external hard drive. I run Windows 7 on my laptop and use Winamp.I think the hosting prog is something like MEXP. Can someone tell me when i try to play a karaoke song, from off a memory stick it won´t play. I can see Winamp trying for a split second, the screen comes up and then nothing.thanks.

Why not just play your songs off your discs in the CD drive? Most will play CDGs just fine. Or maybe you need to reburn all of your discs? What format are the songs on your drive? Are you certain that you have the WinAmp karaoke plugin installed?

A complete CDG file is typically a zipped file that contains two executables, an *.MP3 that contains the music and a *.CDG file that contains the lyrics.
If you clicked just the *.MPG file, you would expect to only get the music, and if you clicked the *.CDG file, you would expect nothing to happen. Nothing broken there.
If you for sure have the karaoke plugin for Winamp installed, then you would want to load the WHOLE file to get it to play. I.e., select OPEN in Winamp and point to the WHOLE file, not just one or the other of these executables.
If you don't have the karaoke plugin for Winamp installed, then you aren't going to be able to display the lyrics, it'll just play the MP3 music. Winamp won't play karaoke without the proper plugin installed.
Again, though. No real reason to preview them. As long as you burned your discs with a reputable program, they are going to sound just like the disc. If they were burned correctly, just toss them on your larger hard drive. Thumb drives are also notoriously slow, though I don't think that's what's causing your issue.

MEXP is a music explorer plugin for Winamp, meant to replace the playlist editor or media library in Winamp, has nothing to do with playing karaoke, only listing it in the media library or playlist editor, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't come into play here concerning your issue. If I understand correctly you are able to play karaoke files off of your external hardirve and have the lyrics show but are unable to play karaoke files off of your flash drive and have the lyrics show..is this correct? Are you using a karaoke player program other than Winamp or are you only using Winamp? Are you sure you have the cdg plugin installed? http://www.sax-n-dotty.co.uk/download/mp3g_plugin.exeWhen you got your external hard drive with all of the karaoke files on it did it not also include a hosting program? What version of winamp are you running? This is kind of puzzling that they would play off of your external hard drive but not off your flash drive...guess I would just move them to your external hard drive and if you decide you don't want to keep them delete them.

Thanks for the replies. Surely i must have the plugin for Winamp, as i can play all my songs from the external hard drive, and yes i only have Winamp. That´s all ivé ever had with no problem. It´s no big deal realy, it was just annoying i couldn't play them from my stick. Thanks again.

I have experienced and heard of several instances where the newer thumb drives are not completely compatible with USB 2.0 ports. "Programs won't install but you can copy them off to the local drive and they install" kinda things. The OP may be experiencing the same kind of thing. I suggest finding an older 2.0 thumb drive in the 2G or 4G variety and see if they work better.

Sorry I'm late in responding, but I just found this forum.
In order for the lyrics screen to appear, the .mp3 and .cdg files must have EXACTLY the same name except for the file extension. Also, both files have to reside in the same folder. Did you check the filenames?
