Hi All....I recently bought a set of Chartbuster Essential 450's books 1-7 for a great price and they looked pretty good. The pouches on these books are clear vinyl and not like the ones on some of the older ones I have that have soft liners in vinyl pouches. Some of the CD's were stuck pretty bad and even being careful the vinyl damaged a few of the disks. If you look through them you can see tiny holes in the front coating. Why the hell did they ever do this. When somebody makes a huge investment, you would expect the quality of the damn packaging to protect your investment, not destroy it:-((

If you see this happening, take the binders and drop them in warm water. Soak them for a bit and work the water into the sleeves. Then you can safely remove the discs. The binders can be usually be salvaged but if not, it is the discs that you need anyway.

Don't know how that might affect the label side, and once damaged, resurfacing won't help. I wouldn't try it.
I might try loading up the innards of the binder with talcum powder, shaking a bit, letting it sit for any moisture absorption, and then try sliding the discs out. Get to keep the binders as well.

There still may be some damage, but you say you gor a very good deal. The value should still be there.

The fact that the discs were stuck tells me they were probably exposed to moisture or high humidity..

Btw- those soft liners that you are knocking would probably have eliminated the problem. They keep moisture from the disc, protect the surfaces, and make for easy sliding in or out. It's the crappier binders that don't have them, and as such at least contributed to your problem.

I actually did the binder soak on an Essentials set once. Bought a bunch of discs from an KJ and the Essentials binder was included. He was a smoker and/or worked smoking clubs and some sort of sticky drink had been spilled on a bunch of discs. I literally filled my bathtub with warm water and dropped a bunch of discs and the binder in and let them soak for about 5 minutes. I couldn't save the binder (had cracks that let water get into the foam) but it was nasty smokey anyway.

I wouldn't soak them in super hot water or for very long, but I was able to rip every one of the discs without issue.

I have done this also, but the cases don't survive the water. but the disc's are able to be
removed with out damage.

Yep did the same thing with a Foundation II set and another cheap binder with 200+ discs in it. I bought them from a DJ that had purchased everything from a host that was getting out of the business. All he wanted was the PA equipment. Somebody had spilled beer or soda all over the binders. Threw them in the sink several pages at a time. Lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap. Salvaged every disc no damage to the front silk screened labels.

I can’t offer a solution, but from experience - Cds last a long time, but they won’t last forever. Thank heavens for 320kbps media-shift. Cd pinholes. Was it because they’re low quality pressed cds? Or maybe the binder sleeves? With doubtful certainty, I’d say both.

I was told by a fellow kj, the earlier sc’s were pressed in low qual cd’s buying them in bulk to cut cost. They’re consequently not agreeable with chemicals used in linear sleeves & in time the reflective coating oxidized, hence holes. I don’t know if there’s any validity to this.

Using case logic binders, mixed-in brands of dk 1-99, mm1100 series, mh, & most of the 15-20yr old cds. All these brands still in pristine condition. What’s weird about this only sc (not all) sticks to the sleeve pouch. Some sc accumulated pinholes & still into gradual deterioration. Most sought after 8125, 8148 & many more, holes, just nothing short of heartbreaking. All my 1,200+ sc’s now stored in a cd spindle cake box pack of 100s.

But didn't someone (in here) once bring up the argument that, if the disc is unplayable, then your HD copy is no longer legit (you are no longer considered 1:1 for that disc)?

But they’re still playable, Cue with the exception of a few tracks:
8148 will play tracks 3 4, 5, 9, 13 & 15
8125 “ “ “ 2, 3, 5, 11, 12, 14

SC at one time initiated a return exchange policy regarding pin holes & I was able to exchange quite a few for the cost of $6.99 shipping. However, it’s sh*t out of luck for cd’s that were pulled due to copyright restrictions. There were times you will get the exact cd title but one or two tracks replaced by different artists.

Anyway, I’m looking at this as whole property, bought in good faith. I could be wrong, I’m not a lawyer but I think the old adage applies here: “Possession is nine-tenths of the law.” Meaning I have possession & physical control of this property, bought in good faith, clearly to my advantage better than a person who has no possession at all. I’ll be more than glad to replace/exchange these to other cd’s of the same title, but unfortunately we all know that’s no longer possible.

Well I don't think they play your CD when you get audited, so shhh keep it to yourself.

If anyone from the old Chartbuster ever needed to check mine to see if they played GOOD LUCK. They might!
