Well, if these ASSES in this country would stop voting for Republicans, maybe things could change little by little!!! The Conservative Right , in this country hates ANY kind of progress!! Personally, I think ANYONE that votes for a Republican, these days, is an absolute fool!! Sorry, but as long as they stay in any kind of power, this country is DOOMED to stay stuck in the 1700's. You have NO idea how angry this BS makes me. It's music. Well, I hope SOME day, your stuff will be available here!! I saw some VERY interesting songs in that first post you made!!

Religion and politics I try to avoid mate! This system spans many years and I don't think it has much to do with politics as it does with money

There is definitely light at the end of the tunnel for you in the US... from what I am hearing there is something quite interesting in the works on your side of the pond....

Stay tuned

It has EVERYTHING to do with Politics. Republicans will not change any laws that take anything away from multi-million dollar companies. They will not change copyright laws in any way that favors anyone but the publishers and record companies. WHY?? They will lose votes. So, while, for the companies, it's about money, for the politicians, it's about votes and contributions!!

I am not in disagreement with you mate. But the fact is, that the same territorial rules apply to any number of other mediums as well. I can't watch many videos or clips that are on the web as it says "Sorry, the content is not available in your country" or something to that effect.

The system is arcane and designed to make money for the publishers - end of story. In the UK, I send my tracks over to the web site, they put them up for sale, sell them, send a report to the PRS with title and artist names and pay the flat fee per track and it's job done.

If I want to sell my tracks in the US, I have to research each song first and identify every writer and sometimes that can be 5 or more!, determine their % of ownership, then ask for an approval from the publisher(s) to do the track. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that before I can go through all of that -I have to pay a $20,000-30,000 advance to EACH publisher annually.

So believe me when I say that I am in agreement with you regarding the system.. But it is what it is and thus my earlier post that after starting this time consuming and expensive process, I am not willing to jeopardise what I have invested in. In the meantime, all I can do is keep producing and selling where I can and continue the process Stateside...

8) This is probably why SC hasn't resumed production in this country, it would be just too expensive, and that end run around the copyright laws they got away with when they made GEM, is no longer available.

Well Smooth if it was YOUR music being sold and you weren't getting paid I think you would be a bit peeved or if someone using it commercially for something you don't like without YOUR permission. Even political parties have gotten slapped for using music without permission.

8) Tim there has to be some sort of balance achieved where everyone can make money without killing the goose that laid the golden egg. The way things are going now it will be impossible eventually to get new karaoke material. Only grandfathered product that you can prove ownership to will be legal, in a way. Still the owner is only protected from suit by the original manufacturer, the owners of the underlying materials can still sue if they choose to do so. For most hosts it would be more trouble to sue, than it would be worth, to the rights holders.

Unfortunately most hosts still in the business would eventually be running a Golden Oldies Show. Eventually karaoke will cease to be if no new product is available. This could be the last generation of hosts. I don't know about other places but the average age of a host is around 50 years or older, already.

Gee Smooth... Call me an uninformed Canadian if you wish, but the last time I looked, your President Obama-the-Socialist-Liberal-Democrat held the reins of power in your country... NOT a Republican. Mind you, I haven't checked the news this morning. Things may have changed.

He has no power because the Republicans have been stonewalling him the whole time.
I WISH he was a Socialist. It's TIME for a bit more Socialism in this country!!

Trust me, you don't want a socialist government. We had a few running provinces in Canada and ran them into the ground and it will take decades to recover.

8) Actually Earl the way things are setup in this country, there are three branches of government, that are supposed to act as a check and balance system. This is to insure not one branch of the government is able to dominant the others. The President is not a dictator, nor a monarch, and doesn't have absolute power. Obama is not a socialist in the classic European mode or even in the Canadian example. Most of the time this system has worked, and unofficially there is a fourth check most people don't know about. In other countries the leader of the government is the leader because his party is in power, they are the majority. Not in this country, it is possible to be President even if your party is the minority party. Sometimes I think the voters do this on purpose, that way nothing too radical is passed. Like it or not this is still a conservative country by and large. The founding fathers had a distrust for large out of control central government, that is why states rights have always been an issue since the beginning of this nation. This idea of divided government has come back to bite us in a way. This recent Congress has done the least in recent history. The gridlock has brought the very functions of government to a halt. Funny though seems we are still able to wage war, even if we can't get together on anything else. I wonder what that says about how our noble experiment is working?

Politics doesn't have a place in this conversation other than absolutely none of them are worth a rats bottom and all of them are part of the major issues with this topic and almost anything you wish to talk about.

Lonnie, if it weren't for the companies making money, no one in the government, including politicians, would get paid. That is the one thing Socialists forget about. It is the companies, entrepreneurs, and their employees that generate income and pay the taxes.
