By large library, I mean hosts with over, say, 30k non- duplicated songs.

I own maybe 25k tracks, many of which are specialty or foreign language discs. I actually carry maybe 18k to standard venues. That's after decades in the business.

My question: What would you guess is the percentage of your libraries used on a REGULAR BASIS?

About 10% on any given year, maybe a little more. I have been collecting since the early 90's. I only purchased great deals and bulk buys. I have purchased a few single cd's at full retail, over the years, but I bet it has been less than 100. If I would have had to purchase everything at retail my library would be muuuuuccchhh smaller.

The point I think you are trying to make is that we all have way more music than will ever be sung. Sad but true! On the bright side we probably wouldn't want a lot of it sung

I can get a good idea with my software
Last year I had 15,350 individual song titles in my library (no foreign language songs in my library) of which 3,578 individual tracks were sung at least 1 time. 23.31% last year.
I'm not going to go through and individualize each song as to how many times they were sung, some that were sung only once last year may be sung alot more this year or the year before - so anything that is sung I will consider it regular as you never know from year to year.

If I included my ENTIRE library, I imagine it would be less than 10%. But I have a rather large selection of foreign language discs. Most of which I haven't even bother to rip.

You are probably way higher than the average host because your show runs 7 days a week for 4 + hours. My songs get sung once a week (at best) for only 3 hours.

Last time I checked, out of about 13,000 unduplicated, about 1,200 individual songs were sang in the past year. It hovers around 9-10%.

Thanks folks. While I have been buying up while I can, I am attempting to establish an upper limit before the mass buying is no longer feasable. The numbers I gave above rep my library before I started buying for expansion. I have yet to enter all that I have bought but figure that I have added around 3-4k so far. However, even a train has to stop sometime.....

Stop bulk buys and discs that may or may not get played - yes. But buying will never cease on a per request basis.

I buy songs quarterly and by request, and my budget for new music these days is literally about $25-30 a quarter. I buy about 10-12 of last quarter's big hits and about 6-8 customer requests a quarter, and that honestly keeps everyone happy.

I spent $30 last night in on demand requests. Not a normal Tuesday by any means, but gives an indication of how much money I invest in music. I spend $25 to $50 a week minimum and have hit $100 a few times.
