An experienced KJ colleague could not get their Mackie Profx 12 to sound 'loud enough' with a Vocopro single channel wireless mic. They went back and forth with Mackie, returned 1 unit for a new one. Nothing would work. Wired mics sounded fine.

This went on for weeks.

Long story short, after spending about a minute on the phone with the KJ, I determined that they were plugging the wireless mic receiver output into the INSERT jack of the mic channel.

It happens, folks.

Any stories you'd like to share?

Other than most kj's I run into use their eq wrong and then wonder why the vocals aren't cutting through and then get a lot of high & low end feedback when they try to turn the mics up. 9 out of 10 times I go to a karaoke place, I will hear bass & treble but usually lacking mids - can you hazard a guess why? Yep, the dreaded smile (or v shape) eq settings.

Funny you should say that--I can tell a few on myself and make you all feel superior.

Last week I did that very thing but with one of the speakers. Somehow I plugged one into the insert. But I did figure it out in a few minutes and before the show started.

My favorite is once (ha ha) I crisscrossed how I plug in the mics and had the singer's mic plugged into my announcing mic channel and vice versa. Nothing like turning the singer up and up and having nothing happen. Then the music ends and I start to say something and everyone ends up cleaning their drinks off of the ceiling.

I dont like to tell on others as I think it just sets one up for a fall. But I will throw myself under the bus for a laugh. And I have provided many.

My EV powered speakers have 2 LINE IN inputs and a LINK connector. I regular plug into the LINK or the wrong INPUT when setting up and get no sound.

I had one night a few years ago where I started the night, hit play in CompuHost for the first karaoke song of the night, and the lyrics came up, but no audio. One of my definite strengths is troubleshooting, but I did everything I could think of over and over, checked and double checked, and couldn't figure it out. This went on for over an hour, and I told the bar owner that it was just going to have to be a DJ night instead of karaoke.

I kept messing with it while I played DJ sets, then at about 11:30, 2.5 hours into my show, I figured out that the volume fader in the CompuHost software was all the way down. I can't remember ever touching that, as I control practically everything with hardware and rarely mess with the audio functions of the software, but that was my issue. I think I was literally blushing with embarrassment, though everyone in the bar thought I was a genius for figuring out such a complex problem.
