being able to play CDG's in your laptop disc drive instead of using a common CDG machine like RSQ or JVC?

CAVS has a free player that is decent. They also have paid versions that add more features.

If you just want it for home use, Winamp has a plug in that will allow you to play CDG files off your CD drive and display the lyrics, all for free.

couldn't get the free players for cavs or microstudio to to work.

But the standalone player that power karaoke makes seems pretty decent, but i did have to use the external drive that i use for ripping my discs to get it to work properly.

that just means your internal drive can not read the cdg subcode. most do, but there are still some that don't.

For home? No one mentioned Karafun (free)?

I use it to check discs in my office and it seems to work just fine.
