That's for sure -- my wife does it and refuses to do the SC version.

Pretty nice substitute IMHO. This brand doesn't appear to be owned by Sound Choice.

Priddis Lost Classics - very usable for Journey.

Agree on Radio Starz - with an OUTSTANDING Cher disc.

Monster Hits did just fine for many artists including Springsteen.

Legends for Rolling Stones, Bee Gees, Springsteen, Grateful Dead, and a whole bunch of others.

Radio Starz is great, but they only made a few discs.

Neither of those is close to Sound Choice in quality, particularly in lead guitar. I do like the occasional Legends track, but they are a cut below. Monster Hits is a last resort.

I would agree that Monster would be a third choice, and I'm not even sure that I would disagree in regard to the lead guitar. It would depend on the particular track.

However, the OP was looking to replace his SC discs and the above could work. On the other hand, as stated above, he could also keep what he considers to be SC standouts and just use those few discs on a player.

I really don't want to pay Sound Choice every year and I ultimately don't want to end up going away from the computer, so if anyone has found good replacement tracks for what SC offers - especially in the Bricks and Foundations I'm all ears.

A difficult task even given a fantasy budget, as so many brands are OOP. Pioneer and DK would cover the older songs, but try to find sets of those?!? Some Chartbuster sets are still out there on Ebay and Amazon, but not nearly the pickings from 2 years ago. Chartbuster even outdid SC on a few classic rock songs (but not nearly as well on others), so it's a trade-off.

The whole job becomes less difficult if instead of trying to replace all the tracks from all your SC discs, you just target the most frequently done songs, and in that case individual downloads of Zoom tracks would probably go a long, long way.

Mr. Entertainer is also pretty decent.

If anyone else has noticed, SBI is doing a bang-up job on American country music, and seems to be the heir apparent to Chartbuster in this regard -- a Brit company! Go figure!

Karaoke Version is filling in their back catalog at an enormous rate and will probably have duplicated all SC ever did if they haven't already, but $3 a song isn't cheap and not all tracks are up to snuff -- really consider them for replacing any duets because they seem to excel at those with duet graphics equal to or surpassing SC, which were the best in the business in that regard. Plan any shopping spree there for July when they hold an annual 30% off sale, and always buy at least 5 songs at a time to double your coupon points towards free songs.

Zoom also sells 100 song mp3+g sets on computer dvd for $30 each. One dvd is for each decade from the 60's forward, then a favorite male songs, favorite female songs, etc. Get the whole set of about 12(?) dvd's and you'd have something a little like a "Foundation" set (and it's pre-ripped so there's a big work saver). If I were starting over from complete scratch I'd want a set.

I do like those Zoom dvds as a concept. My biggest concern would be when were the tracks made. It seems like most karaoke manufacturers go through a learning curve before they hit their stride.

The other thing is Zoom rips at 192 - I ripped my Foundation and Bricks at 320. But I can live with 192 to send SC this message:

"Sound Choice you made a great product, but a great product combined with the contemptuous THIEVES TILL PROVEN INNOCENT attitude towards your paying customers won't keep you alive."

Maybe they changed their rip rate?
This one on Ebay is described as being ripped at 192...

the Zoom 100 series disc were 192 but they have started to release them at 320 recently. Actually they are a great deal for the money. And all you have to do is copy them to your hard drive no ripping involved. And the quality is excellent.

The Zoom Turbo Packs are a good deal too. There's one for the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. The Zoom Pop Box 1 & 2 is a good deal also.

I am not replacing them either. But for future expansion I am picking up Pop Hits Monthly and Chartbusters discs, and continuing to buy in bulk when I can.

For two plus years now, new music has been digital download buys from KaraokeVersion, SBI, Zoom.

I don't plan on replacing my SC discs either. Even though I only have 78 of them, I will get certified when it becomes available again. Maybe they can cut me a break on the price of the audit.

I wouldn't dream of telling you what to do Alan.

If you feel:

you don't have a legal right to use the discs you pay for as you see fit

:that SC as a business has a legitimate right to engage in this kind of inspection of your business merely because you bought from them

and to further require you to pay them to inspect your computer

-- then that's your call.

I am curious as to whether you would feel the same if Microsoft had such a policy and if other software manufacturers were to follow this lucrative new business model.

More importantly - if you couldn't buy Sound Choice what would you buy?

I'm guessing since you only have 78 of their discs you must have found something else more valuable for your money. I can't imagine you run a show with (78 x 15) 1170 songs...

Ah Alan - thank you for the suggestion on the Zoom Turbo Packs. I have the Zoom Pop 2. It was an excellent buy.

If you have the right songs you could get away with 200 songs. You can only play so many songs in a night and a lot of singers sing the same songs every night.

In a given venue AFTER you know exactly what everybody sings 200 songs is very conceivable. But try to predict what those 200 songs are and use them anywhere...

Since you're the second person to offer me a trade...

I intend to keep the SC discs to keep the wife happy. Some of my 150 discs are hers. Even if someone were to bowl me over it'd be a tough sell at home.

I already own a complete set of Karaoke Hits, All Hits, Sweet Georgia Brown, Dangerous, Chartbusters SE 1-6 and Music Maestro Velvet Elvis.

I own strays of the other brands you mention and know the relative quality.

Now... if someone had a nice big set of Pioneer Lasers I might be able to talk her into that.
