so i've always wanted to try hosting one karaoke night where i play strictly female artists in-between singers as filler music...with a different female artist and/or girl group all night long, not repeating the artist, (in other words, i'm playing one bananarama song, one rihanna song...) and i'll mix it up with the genres, (pop, rock, country, etc) old-school & new

though i can try this anytime, i prefer to attempt this right now during march/women's history month so i only got less than 20 days

unknown how the crowd will react to only hearing one gender as filler music all night especially since i'm aiming not to repeat any artist/group. i'd love to make a go at it and stick with it all night, regardless of the reactions. was gonna warn the venue beforehand of my plans and get filler song requests early from regulars...but nah, folk'll just derail it.

would be cool if any other KJs out there wanted to try this too and we can compare notes afterwards

i'll take filler song request ideas here...

already realized, for the line dance moment, i'm playing "the electric slide."

any suggestions on good latina artists to play besides celia cruz, j.lo & gloria estefan

any thoughts, tips, warnings, suggestions on the night?

i'm really looking forward to it

update.

so i tried it, playing only female artists for one night, actually back-to-back nights on the last days of march/women's history month

i also host trivia, so i wrote up a women's history quiz as i do every year for that night but this time played only female artists in-between trivia questions sorta as a practice run for my karaoke night. one thing i noticed off the bat is that women of all ages and backgrounds loved the music and me sticking to it all night. seemed like every time we went back to the music, after a trivia question, a different woman was joining the crowd and dancing. the following night, i was hosting karaoke, so i tried it again, but honestly, i had to switch it up after a couple of hours, because i needed to be better prepared.

here's some tips if you wanna try it:

1) go for it. my gig sounded 'different' and i liked the change of sound. especially if you do nightly shows of karaoke, and looking for something different to try this is a nice change of pace. like i wouldn't have recognized it as my show if i just heard a tape of it. and it definitely got the women's attention in the room. they really went off the rocker after awhile with all the female artists i was playing. 2) don't announce what you're doing. i thought about announcing that i'd be strictly playing female artists all night, but decided not to. geez, if you announce you can't take anymore karaoke singers, a bunch of folks rush to the booth, so announcing what you're doing before you do it is just gonna get folks to rush the booth, so just go ahead and do it without a word. 3) i wanna do it again, if i'd thought about it, i'd a done it again for mother's day in may, but next time i do it, i won't go off the fly as i did those back-to-back nights. meaning, i didn't have a set playlist those nights cause i'm not a playlist kinda guy. but next time, i'll just make a list of all the artists i wanna hit.

and how will you handle the "What happened to my song" questions you are bound to get if you don't announce what you are doing?

Whether its people rushing the booth, or tracking down a singer and explaining why they can't sing the song that they picked, you are still creating a lot of extra traffic/back and forth.

don't think there is any way around that
