yep... that's just what I've said many times.
People mainly liked him for his songs, not his voice. I've often said that Tom Petty is like a Dylan who can sing. I heard this really funny imitation one time of what it would be like to hear a conversation between Dylan and Petty... I was .

A perfect singer? I find them to be extremely rare. For me, however, the ones that come to mind are Kiri te Kanawa, Frederica von Stade, Janet Baker, Placido Domingo (and I can list several others, but since my field of expertise is in the classical field and most of these musicians have studied/performed for decades, what can you expect).

I guess, to me what you mean by a "perfect" singer, is one without a whole lot of quirks to their voice. Someone who has just a clear, pure, and pristine sound with wonderful tone and range, and who has great control.
These are some voices from different genres of music (classical, pop, country, musical theater, jazz) who sprung to mind when I was thinking of what voices I thought were close to "perfect"
Karen Carpenter!! Renee Fleming Michael Ball Aretha Franklin Julie Andrews Sarah Vaughan!! Martina Mcbride Johnny Mathis Nat King Cole!! Stevie Wonder Luther Vandross Harry Belefonte
and I'm sure several others, but those are the ones who sprung to mind first...
That's not to say that there are "unperfect" voices that I do not count among my fav musicians. Like Willy Nelson for example... YES, his voice is extremely nasal!! It's a quirk of his voice that makes him unique, and It also becomes his trademark and ultimately appealing to those who like him. To me, his nasally sound (although he's not one of my fav singers) is an endearing quality on him... It makes him sound more honest and earnest and gives that simple truth to his songs...
There are tons of artists with quirky voices such as his which we would probably not deem conventionally GREAT voices, but they choose the right songs and make their quirks work for them... and they end up sounding original and fresh. Some examples that come to mind are
Macy Gray.. strange strange timbre, BUT it gives and edge to her sound
Billy Holiday.. she had kind of an unusual tone to her voice that was almost nasal/childlike, but it made her different and she used that color of her voice so effectively to express herself in jazz music
Louie Armstrong.. now THERE'S a quirky voice... but it was so endearing, and the man used it and had such personality that it definitely worked and makes him one of the best loved in jazz..
I'm sure you can think of tons of them... I liken these people to those who are not considered conventionally beautiful/handsome but whom people for some reason find attractive nevertheless. There are tons celebrities and other people who are not aesthetically beautiful by traditional standards, BUT they are dang attractive even with their quirky features.. It's the same kind of thing. Their unique and quirky things become their trademark, and if they work it well, and have the personality to carry it off, It becomes a good thing..
Hope that all made sense.. Just my rambling thoughts on the topic
Elisha

If you ever get the chance... ya GOTTA see her!! She doesn't put on a foofy show... just her and a small band... she just stands there and sings! AND whoooah.... what a voice! I DID cry! It was very emotional for me! Sometimes ya gotta hear someone in person before you can really drop your jaw and know what a gift they possess! Put that on your list of things to do Crystal.... seriously.... it's an experience!!!! But my all time favorite concert was Fleetwood Mac... it was a long while back ehem... but OMG!!!! Stevie Nicks is unbelievable live.... I'll have to add her to my list of fav's... just because I love her songs and her unique voice!! Talk about quirky!!! When she started singing... you could hear a pin drop at the Forum... everybody just sat in awe!
Oh Elisha... you brought up Julie Andrews!!! I grew up idolizing her BIG TIME!! Had all her albums and sang every song... accent and all!!!

Don't forget Roger Whittiker, his full voice, can sing fast or slow, and of course his whistling.

I'm a 'closet' Julie Andrews fan too
As for Stevie, I love her voice, but strangely enough, when she first started singing with Fleetwood Mac (and even to this day) she had pitch problems from H3ll...!!!
I find that inspiring and it's proof to me that one can take an 'imperfect' voice, and really make something special out of it.

too funny about the bob dylan and tom petty conversation. Throw Eddie Money in there too... he sings with half a mouth, and Tom Petty rarely opens his! !
You know who I always loved as a singer... as a kid I'd sit for hours listening to his singing in movies (the old reruns), his Christmas LPs, etc...
Bing Crosby! My GOD did that man have an awesome voice.
Him and Nat "King" Cole!

If I were to critique any singers... I would start with LeAnn Rimes...
She doesnt sing anymore... her diction is terrible and her tone has gone completely down hill from her early years. Seeing her in an intimate acoustic concert confirmed that for me.
I know a "couple" of you like her but OMG i cant stand Ashlee Simpson... I dont like Jessica either but Ashlee is not even good enough to host a karaoke night! Ive heard her live and man she is just dredful!
No wonder she was lip syncing on SNL...
All she is, is a studio artist... they make her sound better than she is.
Thats just my opinion so dont shoot me!
Some of my fav's, and singers who I think have fantastic voices...
Reba McEntire, Martina McBride, Mandy Barnett, Garth Brooks, Anastacia and a few others.
But thats whats great... so many differing opinions...it just goes to show that everyones ears hear different things that appeal to them. My ear may hear a quality in someone that your ears may not like so much...
Its interesting.

I agree.
LeAnn sure ain't what she used to be, huh?
I do like most of her songs, but not the way she sings 'em.... She lacks that passion she used to have..... She doesn't sound a "rich" and soulful as her early days....
I guess suin' your daddy for robbin ya blind will make ya kinda lose interest in the biz, huh? !

Please...someone... tell me what it is about Kenny Chesney's voice that has been so profitable??? It has to be his voice because, well... let's just leave it at it has to be his voice.
Don't get me wrong. The man has some talent, and he works his butt off with what he has. It's just that there are SOOO many better male singers on that scene... Why him?

What OP said is how I feel about Janet Jackson. What is so special about this girl? She's had so much plastic surgery she looks like someone puked on her. Her voice is nothing special. And her values....don't get me started.
OH and it is interesting who we like and who we don't....a trip. Sometimes I think it is something deeply unconscious in it that gets triggered that the dreaded voice reminds us of. Otherwise I don't know what it is.

I couldn't disagree more Tigger... I happen to adore Janet... have since she was a little girl. I've disapproved of some of her choices in life, but that's her thing. not mine.
I don't think she'll ever top her Rhythm Nation CD though. She was marketed well, and DID well.
A few of those songs I STILL listen to nowadays!

OP, i agree that kenny doesnt have much talent as far as singing... its his songs that he has been poppin out that have made him what he is...
His voice is mediocre at best.... heard him live and wasnt impressed.... he is another "studio artist" to me.
And I agree about Janet Jackson... my fiance and I often comment on how she uses soooo much background vocals and garbage to cover up her voice. I just dont find her appealing.....
Oh well... more of my 2 pennies!
Oh and Crystal...have you heard leann do "How Do I Live" live? What the heck is she saying? When she sings the "How do I" parts... it sounds like she is saying "Ha-Do-Hii , Ha-Do-Hii, Ha-Do-Hii leeeve" Its just terrible! Although, on her new upcoming album which comes out in January... she finally wrote some of her own stuff (which i respect) and a few of the songs are really good... one is called "When a Woman Loves A Man"....listen for that one to be a hit!! Its a good song.

! ohhhh there's nuthin I hate worse than adding an "H" sound in front of EVERYTHING...... yah sure sometimes it's just comes out in the passion of the song in a spot or two..... but when people just ADD fricken "H"s everywhere.... drives me nuts! ! And yes... LeAnn is definatly a culprit!! ! @Ha do hi!! SOO TRUE!
I'M SO GLAD THERE'S PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT FEEL THE SAME AS I ABOUT JANET JACKSON!!!
Her voice lacks any kind of power or emotion.... so soft....and..just blah. And I don't even like the sound of it much at all. It would be ok if she had an angelic voice or something then the softness would be embraced, but just whispering in the mic all the time..that s'pose to be sexy? Yes she's VERY well marketed...Damn pop singers being a BRAND NAME in themselves.... as far as values, uh.. yah...She's a Jackson ! 'nuff said!
wow! this conversation is very interesting... I could talk about this for DAYS! !!

oh yah.... about Kenny Chesney.... I agree there too. His voice is "nuthin to write home about" (as ma dad would say) In my opinion, he sells records cuz he wears tight jeans and is a hit with the ladies, which THAT I don't really get, cuz sure he's cute n all, but c'mon... I sure wouldn't put him in the "FINE" category! ! ! Aaron Prichette on the other hand.. ! (he's canadian) CAN sing, has quite a unique voice, and OH...MY...GOD he's beeeeautiful! ! And "how come he's not HUGELY popular" you might ask? Because he's CANADIAN and we don't have the same marketing greats up here as the U.S. does.... he's gotta EARN his popularity..
anyone who doesn't know who I'm talkin about... you should check him out. Check out Adam Gregory, too. He's from RIGHT HERE in Edmonton, he's about 19 or 20 and has ONE HELLUVA VOICE!! He's getting VERY big in Canada and gaining all the time, but I have YET to talk to an American who has any idea who he is (but he does have a tendancy to do that "H" thing a lot, too... I'm hoping that's just a phase!) ! ohhh AND he supports the same charity as me, so there's another point for him! ! (Sunshine Dreams For Kids)
TOLD YA I could go on for days! !
