We own the trade dress, which Stingray uses with our permission.

As for the other part, you never know. What brands do you use?

Everything but what you control. Oh, and of course Party Tyme, who is REALLY about to bury SC as the biggest provider in the business!!

Yes I experienced the same thing last night. I just bought a track there a couple of months ago and went on line to purchase and it would not let me. It would not give me payment options page. No notification on the website but when I dug around in the FAQ page I found that it said it may not be able to sell to the U.S. or something to that effect. I also went to Selectatrac and they will not sell either. So I am not sure why this problem is occurring. More international copyright issues? Most likely.

If your doing it as a professional for pay you can get a Help Licence for each system and certification for $250 through http://pep.rocks.com and then you can import your music to a computer and do your shows using karaoke software. As long as you are 1:1 ratio for format shifting to digital format.

Adele does not license her songs for karaoke but you can get the instrumentals for her songs and produce her songs with software for karaoke from MTU.com.

I'm pretty Sure you cannot use your homemade CDG in a public place. YOU might be able to sing it yourself (personal use?), but I do not believe you can let customers use it. Someone verify please?

HELP license is for people WITHOUT discs. if you steal everything SC had you get the HELP for $200 a month and go on as usual.

I've seen plenty of home made karaoke tracks being used during karaoke shows. Who, if anyone, is going to do anything about it? I remember one time a very senior citizen coming in to a show with her own karaoke disc with various song parodies that she had made for her self to sing at karaoke. Are the police going to drag her out in hand cuffs for singing a song? Sound Choice can't seem to make a dent in piracy with pirates having 300,000 songs in their library but now we're supposed to think that someone is going to be able to enforce some kind of limitations on home made karaoke made with Karaoke Version backing tracks? You've got to be kidding me! People in the karaoke world are always trying to make people afraid of invisible monsters where none exist. Sound Choice, under whatever thehir name is this week, is the only entity that is "trying" to police the karaoke industry and they don't seem to be making any headway against the proliferation of pirate KJs. Are we to expect that they will be able to do something against a KJ who makes his own CD+G tracks? I'll believe it when I see one of these cases get into a court room and they find some sweet little old lady guilty for wanting to sing a song that no karaoke manufacturer thought was worth putting out on the market in the first place. There are plenty of karaoke discs out there that were never properly licensed by the companies that made them. Most of those karaoke companies are out of business because of those practices. No KJ has been forced to mothball those discs because they weren't properly licensed. Nobody Cares and nobody is going to care about some KJ who makes a few karaoke tracks on his computer. In the same vein, nobody is out there looking to bust someone for using any tracks made by some of the newer companies like SBI or Karaoke Version or BKD. The only people that seem to keep the possibility of trouble for using these tracks are the die hard Sound Choice supporters who are just trying to create some fear in their competition. The pirates are out there with 300,000 songs in their libraries and tehy are laughing all of the way to their banks. If they're not afraid of using their "technically illegal" Sound Choice tracks; why would they ever be afraid to use a BKD or a home made track at their shows? as long as the venue is paying their PRO Fees?

Please show me ONE instance where some KJ has been busted because he used a homemade track at one of his shows?

You will NEVER see it, and SC CAN'T police anything but what they produced, or have bought, recently, (CB).

The same people that bought into the whole GEM Series scare tactics will be the same ones who pay PEP to use their CB catalog, so Sound Choice knows who their victims will be for a second attempt at strip mining the karaoke business. The pirates will go on and on and continue to proliferate.

There is a karaoke company in Portland & Seattle that do JUST that. If it isn't made on karaoke, they will find the instrumental & make the graphics. If they can't find the instrumental then will make the music themselves. Been doing it with no issues for over 10 years (I think it's actually longer than that). Even had a national writeup in a New York publication about this very thing. They don't sell, give nor distribute their tracks to anyone else but themselves.

The only "GEM series scare tactics" I'm aware of are the ones put out by our opponents, who claimed the GEM series would be confiscated from licensees at the conclusion of a lawsuit by a music publishing group against us.

No one has to pay us to use their CB catalog.

I worry only about my position which has been no worry at all. Business is always conducted the same.

I went through the SC Audit July 2014 and passed. Price for the audit was waived. I secured a 'Covenant Not to Sue' for shifting media to a HD and because of early prudence will never have to pay for that right as long as I continue to abide by the 'CNS'. The forensic drive placed upon my laptop exposed all tracks by all manus that were shifted including CB. Since the acquisition of CB it was simply required of me to send pictures of the CDGs, SCDGs, SDs, that are in my possession of CB's library. Since I am 100% compliant there are no worries. I have 2 non concurrent shows only and run them myself. I have purchased and run 21,700+ tracks.

I had been in the business around 1.5 years when I found out about IP shifting legalities, and pushed for the audit wanting it to be a global audit from all manus concerned with legalities. It was granted by only SC after repeated pushes by me for speed. CB was done and only wanted the Cloud.

So, I am confused by all the griping and complaints logged on this site by hosts that have been in the business for years even up to decades. Just give PEP/SC what they want and get on with your lives. If you have lost in court or through pressure, so what? Save your health and get on.

That was the best advice given to me in my divorce. To give her what she wants and get on with your life. Had I not done that and fought and fought and fought over things, I would probably be a bitter man, had a stress related life and all the health issues involved with that stress. Continuing to be obsessed over any issue is not mentally nor physically healthy. Plus it has got to rub off on other aspects of life like maybe your shows.

You can always disagree, just let it go. Henley and Frey's song 'Get Over It' can apply here.
From Wikepedia > The song is about Henley's frustration and contempt for others (such as TV talk show guests) blaming their failures, mental breakdowns, and financial problems on those who he feels don't deserve it, then believing that the world owes them a favor. The song references William Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part II: "Old Billy was right: let's kill all the lawyers - kill 'em tonight", echoing Shakespeare's line "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers".

If this is even taken to heart by one person it is a success. Anyone that complains about my statement, so be it.

$#!+ how did this get posted in the wrong thread? Oh well, everyone reads them all anyway.

I wanted this in [Sharing the "cost" of PEP tracks] but it says I do not have permission to read that forum although I could and did. It would not let me reply to it and then when I thought it did I found myself here in this forum.

Note I said "Pretty Sure", "Personal use" and "Please Verify"....... Except for the "Video Sync" license crap (I was a TV editor for 25years), I would think that as long as you don't sell it, you can use it with the same rights any cover band would. The question is if letting someone else sing the MP3+G you created would be considered selling it since you are being paid. I play guitar and drums and would love to whip up a few oddball rock tunes like "Tonight" by the Knack as mp3+g. :)

YET. Same thing SC said decades ago when they said it was OK to shift then changed their minds.
