Was thinking about asking karaoke.net to add this to there song downloads, cause it's really not that much extra work with the proper editor but it still might not be worth their time if the majority of people don't bother

so does anyone actually use metadata for their karaoke songs

Looking in hindsight, I really WISHED I would have put in year data. As far as genre, I would use it more provided you could add more than 1 genre per song - which most softwares only allow one. Example Summer Nights - Duet - 70's Hits - Broadway/Musical - using only one genre locks it into a certain specification.

i use both, but like Lonnie, wish i had done it sooner. when i started using Songbookdb a few years back i started. Songbook lets you tag, 2 Genres, Decade, and Language

I have used it for years. As I have stated on several occasions I have books broken down into several categories: Oldies, Country, Newer Pop, and Misc (Christmas, Show Tunes, Foreign, Parodies, Etc.). I wish I had the actual year released, but that would have taken a lot more work.

My singers, at first, would just grab a book and find that they could not find a song they were looking for. Then I showed them to read the book cover (huge 1 inch letters and as Cue points out "reading is fundamental") and select the appropriate book.

I don't manually populate the year for karaoke, and the only genres I use are "Karaoke" or "Karaoke Video". I've thought about going back and populating those fields, but I have better things to do on this planet with my time. I've spent probably 1000's of hours already with karaoke file maintenance. If I really need to know the year for a song, I'll google that sh-it. I always have my regular music database with me when I host (using Karma to host, Virtual DJ for music and videos), and I have the genres and years well populated there, so if I need a list of popular songs in a pinch, I can pull them up with Virtual DJ.

Neat concept, but I have enough trouble just editing the artist and titles for consistency.

I too have spent 1000's of hours editing my files, but I stated many years ago sorting them into my chosen categories.

Hmm that's about what i thought. I still haven't found the right venue for me, but I would like to be prepared for when i do. I've been using the songbookdb app and site for a while now, and there search features by decade and genre are handy and all my GEM series songs have full metadata inluding year which is what got me thinking about this topic in the first place.

Altho i have to admit it was frustrating to find that 3 of the GEM categories didn't show up in in the category tag in songbookdb. The tag editor i use is pretty cool, but i haven't figured out if there is a way to do multi song editing for just one field.

thanks for the input

-James
