I noticed the first page was reduced to 30 subs. I just commented on a couple of songs and it did move faster. I guess that shows that for everything there's always a price to pay. I'm willing to work around that in exchange for speed. Thanks Phill.

Okay - I am banging my head against the wall...
I need to re-work the entire Singer's Showcase.
There seems to be an issue with the comments and the updating of profiles. These two items cause the major portion of the delays.
Here is what happens (as brief as I can)
1) You enter your comments and hit submit.
2) the script adds your comments and rank (if provided)
3) it then loads the persons profile.
4) here it updates the total comments and averages their ranks.
* I previously had removed the possiblilty of changing the rank you provided but if you edited your comments for some reason it deleted the rank you had provided so you would have to re-rak the submission. Well I changed it back so that you can see the rank you had previously provided. The downside is you can change the rank. Oh well!
The speed issue is something I need to work out. It shouldn't take that long to enter our comments and it shouldn't take so long to update the person's profile either!
Hmmm...
Working on it...
For now I'm taking a break to see if I can let my mind rest! I've been at this for nearly 6 hours!!!

The Latest Submissions page change is temporary!
I was testing a few items...
I also see that we have someone in the background trying to hack into the site. This is another major reason for the delays...
Earlier I rebooted the server which knocked them out. Now that the server has been up for awhile it again is running.
It is an automated script that is running from a bounced IP !!! I am attempting to track this down!
Why must people create such distructive scripts?
Here is what the script is doing:
It attempts to open the database - it keeps trying and causes the server to "hang" the script continuously runs until it finds a "backdoor"
There isn't one so it runs in a loop...
What this script is going to do once it gets in is beyond me... We don't have anything of value stored in the database?
I apologize for this and will do what I can to prevent this from happening.

This sounds identical to the situation that crashed the site a few months back. Hacker created a loop, which crashed the site. We lost a few days as I recall too. (About 3 days were lost from the site). Either late January, or early-mid February as I recall.

Steven -
Yes someone did try to "Crack" into the site and caused a loop.
Now we have software in place to prevent them access.
Unfortunately it can't prevent attempts to access! Especially if I don't know where they are or what IP they are using... It keeps coming up with a new IP address with each attempt.
Also, the site was down for under 12 hours not 3 days! Yikes! 12 hours was bad enough - I couldn't imagine downtime of that much!
I have restaretd the MySQL (Datatbase) server a couple times... I hope that causes the script to loose interest but who knows it is automated...

True Phill. I know the Site wasn't down long. Yet when you did restore the site, weren't about three days of site memory gone ? Posts between (something like) the 15th and 18th were missing ? People that joined clubs during that period couldn't get in ? there was no memory, and posts during a several day period were in fact missing ?

I am really hoping that the shortening of the submission pages will be temporary. I think this will have a huge impact on comments, since most people (I would assume) only glance over the first page.

Actually, I like having the shorter submissions page, not only because it loads faster and is easier to scroll down, but because it makes the list of songs seem less daunting I still keep going, though, after I reach the end of the page...
Phil, sorry you are having someone do that. I guess that are a lot of malcontents and creeps out there. I hope it's not someone who is pissed that they got bad comments!!
I think I told you before, but my own site was hacked in '03 and someone deleted the whole thing...it was very bad and affected my site for a long time because we didn't have it ocmpletely backed up.

I am wondering if it is bandwidth from your provider. There is always a quandry on paysites as to how expenisve a site to pay for bandwidth to handle how many people versus money coming in. An interesting item would be how many hits you get a day, how many repeater (hack probe and retries) you get.
I am noticing though, as last night at one point there was one paying member (me) and two non - and I was uploading it was sluggish.
We have a fast connect. The biggest lag is after you upload and your little band thing says its all through, before the page refreshes and the song comes up. I have experienced many minutes lag on this sometimes.

This site is on a server that provides an extreme amount of bandwidth (much more than your typical site.)
At my end it takes approximately 3 seconds to load any page within the site, this would include the forums and Singer's Showcase. I tested the speed aspect of the site and it states the following:
14.4K - 49.72 seconds
28.8K - 24.94 seconds
33.6K - 15.05 seconds
56K - 9.08 seconds
ISDN 128K - 2.86 seconds
T1 1.44Mbps 0.43 seconds
Part of the trouble with the speed is not only your actual connection, but some of the scripts are "heavy" with processes. I am working on these and will attempt to reduce the lag.
Also, some people have requested an increase of submissions on the main page. I will set this to display 50 vs 30 (the current setting.)

Hi Folks,
Yes I have found it's much slower too, but Suzanne gave out a good idea, have two browers open and then you don't have to wait about. Thanks for that tip Suzanne !
Cheers, Peter

You're welcome, Peter! Sometimes it helps to be impatient, I guess
Another thing I do...
I notice that after I comment on a song, it takes me to the profile rather than the main page, and if I click on the main page link it goes right back to the top (which is not necessarily where I want to be) so I prefer to use the BACK button instead and that takes it back to where I left off in the list.
I have a problem with scrolling down on the list, the graphics get weird on me so it makes it hard to scroll down to exactly where I was (they get blurry, not sure exactly how to explain it).
