I got some vacation time coming to me bud... I'm ready to do it... don't have any equipment at the moment, so you'd have to show me some stuff...
ya up for a novice ta hang around you like a little puppy?
Mon-Wed NORMALLY are good days for me. I got called into work tonight, which is why I'm posting at 11:31 at night! !
My lady has a doctor's appointment tomorrow... she has been fighting a pretty serious condition... makes the small staff infection I faced miniscule in comparison. Anyway, once we know what's going on with her, I'll take ya up on the trips!

Wait until the weather gets a bit dryer and warmer--im not into sitting around in the rain or freezing cold for hours(unless maybe for some WINTER STEELHEAD). But springtime when the weather starts to stabilize and warms up. Possibly spring break. Or some random warm weekend before that. As for equipment, I got everything we'd need for sturgeon, trout, bass--the usual suspects. Poles, bait, flys, lures, etc. Hvent had much expereince with salmon or steelhead so im still trying to figure those out. But sturgeon would probly be the best bet--easy to catch--aint no rocket sience there. Trout are a bit tricker. Just need REALLY HEAVY GEAR for sturgeon--go look at the size of the hook in the sturgeon pic i posted--but then when your trying to catch fish that go up to 1200 lbs.......................not the same as a 12" trout. But your assignment for now Matt is some HOMEWORK---start going to oregon fishing websites and start studying up!!

I caught some steelhead on the Lewis river a couple years ago... was easy enough, so I'm not a total novice! ! But someone DID have to tell me how to do it from a boat in the downstream! heheheh
I've never ate sturgeon though!

You can either have sturgeon steaks or smoked. Smoked sturgeon is a delicacy. Compares favorablye to a chicken texture and flavor.
Go to any gas station and and pick up a copy of OREGON FISHING AND HUNTING GUIDE Magazine.
or go to GI Joes and pick up a copy of the OREGON FISHING GUIDE book--also any free fishing pamphlets they have(they have them on many different types of fishing)

Crystal when I lived in Alta the only egg rolls they made out there were huge and stuffed with bean sprouts and they were terrible. Maybe they've changed that but couldn't wait to get home for some real meat ones. That and fresh haddock, clams, scallops, and of course lobsters. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm drooooooooooooool.

If it tastes like chicken, and is a delicacy, then buy some chicken, and save money! We have Popeyes chicken here, you know, it tastes just like sturgeon.....

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE CHICAGO PIZZA! are you a pizza uno gal or a gino's east gal? my personal fav is gino's....but then again i really like fluky's chicago dogs, too! Babs @ Tue Jan 31, 2006 9:26 am wrote: By the way - nice fishies
thank you, thank you! those are all from the same day as you can probably tell. anytime you can fish in late january and catch hogs like that it's a blast. funny thing is we were the only boat catching. everyone else was trying to watch what we were doind adn getting closer and closer. we'd just move to a different spot and keep catching. it helps to know the lake VERY well. (use to live about 2 miles away)
call me arrogant, but i assume the "nice fishies were for the bass pics. i realize there were others.

As for regional dish, can't beat the dungeness crabs. I used to catch those off one of San Fran's piers for free. You do need license for it though. Boy they were good.
There isn't really anything else that is kind of unique about food around here other than fresh seafood. However, there are huge variety of ethnic food in this area. At any point I have a choice of Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Pershian, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Indian and many other cultural food within short distance from my house. It's not your usual run of the mill ethnic food either. Many of the specialty restaurants are around here. Korean BBQ, Northern Indian food, Pho (vietnamese noodle soup), Vietnamese sandwiches, Dim Sum, etc. etc.
Can you tell I LOVE food? Anyways, I think you would be in for a treat if you visit this way.

Great White Sturgeon
The Columbia River near Portland, Oregon is famous for its large population of white sturgeon. They range in size from 20 inches to over 12 feet long. Sturgeon are almost always hungry, and you are almost guaranteed that you will catch fish.
May through September is the time, and the Columbia River is the place if you want to catch a freshwater fish from 100 to over 600 pounds. This may sound to good to be true, but catching one to ten, 100 pound plus sturgeon a day is almost guaranteed. These big sturgeon are hard fighting and many will jump repeatedly once hooked. Most will take from one-half an hour to well over an hour to bring to the boat. All sturgeon over 60 inches must be released, so bring your camera or no one will believe you!
December through April are the best months to catch lots of sturgeon - - 20 to 40 sturgeon a day are common for the boat. Most of these fish will be between 30 to 60 inches long and will weigh from 5 to over 60 pounds. This is the best time to catch a legal keeper size sturgeon (42 to 60 inches), which are excellent to eat. If you want a day of catching lots of fish, this is it.

Holy smokes, That is a big one.. Yes, just like that...Not so gib thought the one I caught was about waist high...But scary to me none the less....I still shiver when I think about it... What did you guys do with that thing...I didn't think you could eat them...Can you imagine that thing nibbling on you when you got your waders on in the water...
And now I won't be able to go in Sam Rayburn Lake again...
