hi all.  i'm a newbie here so please bear with me.

i have an old song on cd from which i wanted to remove the vocals so that i could sing that at a friend's birthday party next month (have tried everywhere but just cannot find a karaoke version of that song).  have tried goldwave and audacity but along with the vocals, out goes the accompanying music!  so i have finally decided to do the following:

*  keep the intro music and and all other music that is not associated with the vocals
*  remove those bits of the song which contain the vocals
*  replace the cut sections with light instruments that would normally accompany the vocals.

i have never done this before so was wondering if this is possible.  if so, what software do i need?  i'm pretty sure i can use either goldwave or audacity to perform the cut & paste function.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

and one other thing - it's an old indian song i'm talking about, not that it makes any difference i think.

Have you considered creating a midi file? If you use the YamahaXG (NOT Roland) standard, you can get a very good sounding song. What you are attempting sounds wayyyyyyyy to much work, and quite frankly, without the right audio editing software (something that can specifically cut/paste at a zero db X-point) your result will sound horrible.

there are programs out there to remove vocals... do a search on the site here. It's been discussed many, MANY times.

The problem is... it's extremely rare that you CAN adequately remove the vocals and not ruin the music. Robdog is probably the biggest expert on it. I've tried 400 songs, and only gotten passible results in THREE files... and I'm not really happy with two of them. Vocals are basically recorded in the midrange, and the vocal removers out there just eliminate some of that midrange... so it alters the music as well.

To be honest, if it were REALLY possible, do you think that most folks would have been doing it by now? and I don't mean the occassional song, but ALL the time!

Like Knightshows said, it is hit and miss, but mostly miss.  Perhaps purchasing the song in karaoke format would be a cheaper/easier whay to go.

Several mfgs will make custom CDG discs with the song/songs you want/need on it.
