I know someone who lives in Manhatten and she told me a couple of years ago that it cost her 800.00 a month just for a parking space for her car that she very rarely drives,,

I asked her why she kept it and she sent me a picture...It is very sweet 67 convertible corvette that her dad bought brand new so she can't part with it....

So just given that information, my suggestion would be sell you car as soon as you get there or on the way...

ShyGuy, we live a few hours from NYC, and my mom goes into Lincoln Center every other week. I was born and raised within 30 miles of NYC, and  have family living in the heart of the city, and my father is Manhattan born and raised,  I'll be talking with family tomorrow.  I can get you specifics at that time.  Offhand I only have a rough knowledge, yet I DO know certain area's like Central Park West are EXTREMELY costly.  If you have a specific question, I can even make a quick call now. Naturally alot depends on what type of dwelling you wish to live in, Coop vs rental apt in the heart of the city, as opposed to the outskirts..etc.   Would you want to be directly IN Manhattan ?  Naturally the further a radius you go,  the more price options you have.

I suppose alot depends on how many of you there are, home or apt IN or outside the city. etc

Steven, very good info and questions there (we might even be able to discuss this ) The job would be in Manhattan, but the problem is that I'm a country guy (much like my friend Keith02) So I guess living in Manhattan would probably kill me, much to the delight of some forum members here
Is there anywhere (relatively) close where you can still own a house? I'd hate living on top of mu neighbors.

Tell me what radius you would be willing to live OUTSIDE of Manhattan, and things can get quite affordable.  You have options for homes right across the Hudson River in Englewood New Jersey, where there are LOADS of ranches that are affordable.  You'd just be across the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey, yet VERY close to the city itelf.  Long Island also has decent places to buy affordable homes..  Let me get an idea as to what other's who've relocated to work in the city have done.. and proximity vs affordability,  I can do that tomorrow morning,  the folks aren't home,  just called

I can find out intricate details for you and will. Naturally another concern assuming you have a younger one in school (which I assume you no longer do) would be school systems.  Many live in Greenwich, or Stamford CT area, and the school systems are quite good in Fairfield county,  You'd be on a train commute line to the city which would be VERY close.  Many take the train to and from work,  into Grand Central Station..  Not a bad commute.

Westchester county NY, like Fairfield county CAN be quite costly, yet depending on what you opt for, and YOUR individual standards some like living in Westport, Wilton Ct...  Scarsdale NY.....etc...   My tastes are not the tastes of someone who opts for a more lavish or extravagant locations life-style, housing, and offerings, so I want to make no assumptions.. More info I have, the more I can give you facts,

Incidently, you'll likely (assuming you take a job IN Manhattan) opt to commute via train.  Another consideration. New Haven CT to Greenwich CT..  Is all right on tracks basically,  you park at the station, and take the train to work.  Easiest way to travel to work.. Trains are pretty nice too around that area.

Good idea.  Look at a few areas, get a rough radius.  This way I can namedrop a city or two, and at least find out if THAT'S a place where most would want to live. One never knows of course around a large city.  THere are bad area's too. Yet this will give an idea of price-range... You have options for three states that are VERY close too, another consideration..  CT, NJ, and of course NY surrounding vacinity

Oh man,  you are into Aquaria and aquascaping too ?  Fresh and Saltwater Tropicals ?  Heck, rather than debating we could've been trading secrets about how crappy Anacharis Elodea is,  or If Innes, and Axelrod are still into the hobby... Such as CHeradon Axelrodi -  Caridnal tet,,    Hyperphinessi Innisi,  Neon Tet,...

Does metaframe and Supreme still make equipment ?  are they still using diatomacious earth filters by King, to clean ?   I have older Singer Piston Pumps made my supreme.... This was a HUGE HS hobby of mine...

Someone was mentioning that either the author's Innes or Axelrod turned out to be quite shady,  I don't recall which one, or know this to be fact,  yet they were huge into the hobby in the 70's

God,  I knocked my last tank down 20 years ago, but still recall Brachydanio rerio - Zebra Danio,  Oscillotus Astronotis,  Standard Oscar,  etc..  I was HUGE into this.  Yet don't recall the actual spelling of course..

I wonder if the 55 gallon and 75H tanks would still fit the nice 48 inch hoods I have with the costly lighting for the fish and plants... I've been starving to get back into Fresh Water Trops.... I still have the Nitrate Nitrogen, Ammonium, Copper test kits and trace minerals for the Salt water trops, and inverts, Hydrometers... yet that was a pretty messy experience...,  especially for a small area..  I"d love a 55 gallon Community tank now..  Yet my equipment in likely antiquated,  would even kill todays generations of spoiled ritzy fish

Wasn't the Plecostomus the talking cat ?  When I was young I felt bad when people would pick it up by the dorsal fin, and it's start squalking... Today things are so much different, in my day you didn't hear about fresh water rays.. Sure we had some nasty cichlids,  and even breeds like Pacu,   Which actually weren't the Silver dollar Red Pirahna hybred..  They bring Red Belly Pirahna into the states under the name "Pacu" in those days knowing quite well these were reds... Some kid always had to have one for drool factor of course ...  The only thing that concerned me about the frogs (at least as I vaguely recall) was that for an exotic freshwater community tank, they were relatively dirty... Plus they'd jump out've the tank quite easily.. I vaguely recall it wasn't recommended to have a frog, or even mystery snail type critter in a tank with some of the more delicate fresh water trops... I was constantly treating for Ich, shimmies and even fluke.. A problem with the live-bearers such as the swordtails (also real jumpers), Platy's, Mollies.. Semi-fancy guppies and fancies were abit more hardy, of course you DID NOT want to have barbs or angels in a tank with slower fancy guppies or even a Male Beta....

I see you have alot of the tetra's... I liked the tetra's... Interesting fish..  Danio's too.. You ever see a hatchet fish go flying across a room ?  It's WILD... THey are actually flying fish.....  Those little things will flap their pectoral fins, and go flying halfway down a hallway.... I'd wake up with swordtails, Zebra danios, and hatchet fish in my bed when I was in HS...     I learned you MUST have a full hood for alot of these species...

I'll keep it confidential btw...Even if we end up tearing one-another's eyes out in here fighting over an issue such as differences between Mennonites and Amish folks

I'm not sure about that either, to be honest. The money "looks" good, but then it's expensive, and all those people around me (shudder)
I'm an Electrical Engineer consulting to Power plants mainly. I'd rather stay here in the bushes where I'm happy (don't laugh Keith, I am a happy person )

My fathers an electrical engineer too..Just retired..  He was in security systems, and then got into motor parts.. Was director of engineering for Daystrom, Mosler Safe Co, Superior Electric company, and when they let their engineering dept go from the Bristol CT plant.. The company that bought them fortuneately hired him, and set him up with a home office to get into their hybrid auto division (Dana Corp in the midwest),  Last year at 80 he retired. Dana couldn't afford to keep him so he finally retired, and would still rather be working... Dana I believe recently went bankrupt too .

I'll do what I can for you Shyguy.. Now assuming you'll be doing any work over in the Groton/New London CT area.. General Dynamics has EB there, and it's an area with a few nucleur facilities..(I think) and in such a case Fairfield Cnty CT..  might be more practical. My guess is you don't want to be right IN Manhattan.. Because you don't want to live in a congested setting assuming traveling a short distance can get you a small home with some privacy... Just a slightly longer work day due to added commute time... Yet living right in manhattan in an acceptable place for you might NOT be the most practical route... assuming you are willing to do a little traveling to and from work., Problem with the nice places right in the heart of  Manhattan for instance, is a friend of mine's mom lived in Central Park West.  16th floor of an apt building, back in 1981 her rent was 2400/month WITHOUT utilities.. This was not a penthouse suite incidently... NY is VERY costly.. Yet I'll find out what I can... So think of options outside of the actual city...  Central Park West btw,  is one of the nicer NYC areas... Yet to me, a person who also likes some privacy and a little land separating me from neighbors, it was VERY congested feeling... Not spacious, and certainly not elaborate,  just the cost of living in NY City in a nice area as far as NYC standards go... So if you are asking in general is it VERY expensive to live in a decent area of NYC itself, the answer is YES, VERY costly...assuming you want to live in something somewhat spacious, in a reasonably safe location. Travel a little bit, and LOADS of doors open for you.. Also keep in mind, it's noisy in the city at night. VERY different type lifestyle as you say.
