According to the calendar.. its Spring... just wish the weather would cooperate ... Can't wait for some milder weather myself.

Got any pics of your pony???  LOVE horses!!!
Yeah, there is a pic of him here:

I just called in at work and took the day off....I got to get the pony stitched up and see about moving the app to my buddies place...We will need to fix his fence and get his barn ready...The app has been here 5 months already and my buddy has been dragging his butt getting him home....So I'll make it a priority today...I can't have this problem any longer.

I grew up in N.Y., and my family is all still there, but now I live on the hurricane "adjusted" Mississippi gulf coast.  I knew a LOT of people who lived in Rockland, Orange, Westchester, and Dutchess counties in N.Y. and commuted by train to work in the city.  Westchester and Dutchess can get a little more expensive than Rockland or Orange county... Although Orange and Rockland county house prices are beginning to go through the roof.   My lil sister just bought a small 1200 sqare foot house for about $250,000 with a small yard.  And that was actually a pretty good price for the area.  She also owns a co-op over in Westchester that is just a small one bedroom that she is selling currently for $130,000.   All of these areas are close enough to the city to commute (for most people) but offer some of that small town feel that most prefer.  (maybe not so much Westchester) Some Orange county, Dutchess county areas offer that country type living as well.  Lots of cow/horse country in some areas of these counties.  I would like to move to N.Y. to be closer to my family, but I have lived in the south now including Florida and Mississippi since 1992, and you get used to the low cost of living...

He needs to do a rough search, and can do-so online "real estate NYC".  I spoke with my mom today, and she mentioned that there's really no way to answer such a question unless Shyguy gives some indication as to what he'd deem acceptable, reason being, it depends on neighborhood within Manhattan, view, would he want a doorman in his building ?. Neighborhood within Manhattan drastically makes a difference in cost, yet even lower end semi-acceptable locations are exorbitant rental-wise in one of the most costly areas of the nation.  Would he want a nicer area such as Central Park West, which now is often 20,000 per month (utilities included) and higher.  NYC is among the MOST expensive places to live in the United States.  She asked, would he be willing to look into living across the GW Bridge in FT Lee NJ,  where he'd get MORE for his dollar in terms of living options, rental options, etc...  Would he wish to buy into a Coop, rent an apt, etc ?   He needs to be more specific as to what he wants.. but in general, the answer to the question, "How is the Manhattan cost of living" ?

Among the highest in the US...

Most live in surrounding areas, because at that point things become affordable.

He needs to narrow down what is and isn't acceptable to him... Does he want a small home ?  If-so Manhattan is no longer an option. Jersey is... and is quite close.

Thing is, many move to Westport CT (where I spent many years of my life) because it's about an hours commute to the city, (saugatuck Train station) and MUCH more affordable than living in the city.. You can get a nice small home there or condo ....

Of course Westport (Fairfield county) is considered rediculously expensive too... A small two bedroom home in some area's with 1/2 an acre start's at 750K.

It all depends on what's acceptable living conditions to him.. It's close to impossible to answer an ambiguous question until more specific's are given, and known...Yet the answer,  If he wants a decent rental property in Manhattan, and he's used to nice quiet rural type living.... to find a nice place sq ft wise, and quiet/safety-wise.. is EXTREMELY costly .  Among the highest in the nation.

LOL CCindy,  You're closer to being a Canadian.

New England is notorious for sighting's such as that.  Just this afternoon I was out walking by our back pond with a camera,  and I caught the critter that we have living out back on 3-D equipment.  If you put on your red and blue glasses, you can see the typical critter that people love to scoff at, and call an "illusion".   Each day around "happy hour" this fellow rises above the surface, and is ALWAYS this visible, yet the people around here see it, and just say "Nah,  that's just an illusion, it's just the angle in which the sun hits the tree's"... People around here are so conservative, they refuse to accept anything out of the normal exists, Yet IMHO, this isn't an illusion.  It looks quite real to me !!  Yet NOONE believes me,  they just say; "Kappy, that's a little piece of driftwood sticking out've the water, when's the next time you see your shrink?" :(

I'm an Electrical Engineer consulting to Power plants mainly. I'd rather stay here in the bushes where I'm happy (don't laugh Keith, I am a happy person LOL )

Steven I'll keep you posted, TYVM my man for all the info!

Was there a reason you favored electrical engineering over electronics engineering?
I wanted to be an electronics engineer until I realized that my calculus abilities were next to nil.

I live in NYC... I'm an Apatment dweller in Queens. As for Manhattan, rents are extremely high. But, rents are more reasonable within the other boroughs.

Do you think Fort Lee, or Englewood would be his best bet for brief distance yet still enable him to have some space more affordably ?

Big Jimmy C would also have more current awareness on neighborhoods, and various facts...

I really don't know what those areas are like. I think SG needs to give more detail as to what he's looking for, and what he can afford to spend on either a House or for Rent.

Agreed.

I suppose he got the answer to his question however.

Any one from New York, near or around Manhattan? I need some information regarding cost of living there.

In Manhattan is exorbitant, "near or around" depends on where.

Hm, good question and I had to think about that for a second. When I stufied, the degree was called Electrical Engineering - low current which pretty much covered everything for digital through analog electronics and up to 480 V. After that, I fiddled around with electronics, but for some reason my life drifted into the binary world, and that's where I ended up, mixing the 0's and 1's with high voltage.

My wife and I had some lengthy discussions about this, and I think neither of us will actually survive in NY. We are way to used to living the simple life without the daily rush. We both have good paying jobs here, a nice spot to live and no pollution. So, saying all that, we have decided to decline the offer, even though it sounded very tasty.

Thank you very much for your efforts, and if nothing else, a lot of the forum members and myself have learned a lot from you.

I actually host karaoke at the Upstairs Downstairs club in Biloxi.  I used to sing karaoke myself at Michaels on Hwy 49, and at the Pirate's Den before the storm.  I am looking to work at a new location, hopefully SOON.  Been at the Stairs since November.
