You know it's going to be a bad Karaoke night when:
1) The song book by title AND artist is less than 1" think, with sheet protectors, and printed in 16 point Arial, single sided, and you immediately recognize that it's the Sweet Georgia Brown disc set.
2) The sound system is running through a home audio amplifer and home speakers (yes Virginia, been there, done that)
3) The KJ is drunker at 10:00 PM than you are at 1:00 AM.
4) The KJ is leaving every 10 to 15 minutes to "powder their nose."
5) The microphone says Radio Shack and it's not an XLR model.
6) The KJ has no system for running a rotation and Tonya, the cute blonde with the so-so voice sings four times to your one.
7) You get thrown out of the bar for singing Adam Sandler's At A Medium Pace (been there, done that).
8) You go to that unknown dive hide away because no one ever goes there and you'll get to sing a lot because you go and there are 100 people there for some unknown reason.
9) Vito, the tone deaf bar drunk keeps coming up and grabbing the second microphone when other people are singing and the KJ will not turn the second microphone off.

The KJ is so sick she sits in a stool and lays her head on the table all night.
OOps that was me, sorry. First time I made no tips in a night. I didn't
have the energy to sing. I tried, but had to call someone up to finish the song for me.

Babs, couldn't you find a sub KJ and just take it easy or is that too hard to arrange?

I have 1 sub, but it was his bowling night.
By the time I realized I was still going to be to sick - he was already
gone for the night.
I truely thought if I could just get setup the rest would be easy.
I learned my lesson. I never clock watched so much in my life.

It's so dead, you are praying for the worst singer you know to show up, just to give you a break.

I stopped in a bad Karaoke night last week.
Ah, the guys books were listed by his own number system, I could not tell the disc manufacture of anything.
After asking he had about 5 Sound Choice Disc, Everything I mainly sing is Soundchoice.
The Book only had 5,000 to 6,000 song and I couldn't find any of my regular songs.
The Mics were Wired.
The Mics were >$50
The place was huge will big projection and plasma tv's everywhere and you had to sing off a 13" tv on stage.
I could talk over the sound system.
The Speakers were on the floor.
The place was really bright.
A Captain and Coke was $4.50

The KJ tells you, you won't be singing your song request because that's "his" song.

The drunkest guy in the bar tonight wanted to sing. He sucked. Barely looked at the TV. Too busy dancing around like a fool and trying to show off. He knocked over a stool and the owner told him to sit down, but the idiot didn't tell him to leave. Would have put most of the crowd at ease if he left. And why are they always 6'4"? Must have something to do with the "tall & stupid" gene. He came up 2 times in the rotation. He was due to come up at the end of the night, in fact he left right before I did. He wanted another song. I pointed to my no more request sign and told him I didn't have room. Thinking about the future abuse to our ears & my $600 mike. He pulls out a wad of money$$$$$. Tempted as I was to relieve him of some dough, I put everyone else in the bar above my thoughts. I told him there was no room for another song. Why do the biggest, drunkest idiots want to sing karaoke? It's almost a full moon. Think about it....do we really need the moon? Can't we do without high and low tides and solar eclipses and the effect it has on some people?

That's so funny you said something about a full moon. I swear I
can tell when it is a full moon on karaoke night. I don't even have to look.
Good for you! on turning down the money. For me it is more to keep my sanity.
Yeah I think about the patrons ears also, but I'd rather not have to deal with what might happen if I let the guy sing.

Quote: I put in Drowning Pools "Bodies" for the next rotation, and I end up sandwiched in Dixie Chicks' "Landslide" and Fugees' "Killing Me Softly"
Speaking of the Fugees' version of "Killing Me Softly"--it's a good version, but I'm a little tired of it. And _WHAT_ is the deal with that "1 time...2 times" crap (usually said by KJ's) during the chorus??? That doesn't even fit with the words of the song! It drives me batty!
'Course if I ever sing that song, I'm gonna sing the Roberta Flack version anyway--I've always preferred that one.
