I have bought a few of these CDG's - usually at a discount and when I was first buying discs and didn't know any better, and although the music on them wasn't bad, the lyrics were terrible. Right now I have a song I'm trying to record that I have on an SGB disc and the lyrics were so screwed up I had to download the correct ones for a site online. I run into lyrics errors now and then but this was crazy!! I'm not a KJ, but I have a pretty good selection for a home user - I wouldn't recommend SGB and I haven't bought any since my initial purchase.

I'll admit, I have the SGB set. For the most part, when there are duplicates, I eliminate the SGB version from my book. They have some passable tracks, mostly in the rock vein. There are some real stinkers - Weird Al (do not print this in your book) and much of the "standards" (i.e., Sinatra). Prices have come way down from when I got into it on other lines such as SC, CB, and the DK Millennium (if that's still available). In all, I wouldn't recommend the SGB set. Just my $.02.

I would recommend SGB discs to anybody. I have most of the rock, classic rock and standards discs. I'm completely satisfied with all of the discs that I own. I don't know why anyone would want South Park or Weird Al discs. Just joking! A lot of people think that Soundchoice is the best/only option, but I don't think they are worth paying that much more. In fact, I thought the SGB version of Interstate Love Song by STP was just as good or better than the SC version. SGB also produced a lot of discs that focused on one genre or artist. When I buy a SC disc, they usually have songs from multiple genres, so you have to buy many more discs. This doesn't apply to the SC Headbanger's hits I usually go to my favorite online website and listen to the samples to evaluate the sound quality of the discs. Buying SGB discs is an affordable way to build your collection, and most people will be satisified with the quality.

I think the music quality was quite good on SGB disks but the lyrics are wayyyy out in left field, far worse than any other discs I've purchased. I did the same thing though - I wanted a variety right away and the price was right, so it was fine for that period in time. They did have some awesome song selections, however I've never bought another. Just my thoughts....

Wow, you have GOT to be kidding right? The Sound Choice version is by far the most accurate - provided you can get it since it's been discontinued. The SGB sounds like a midified version that anyone can do in their basement!

The SGB version of "Whole Lotta Rosie" is pretty good... I cut my teeth on it.
The SC version is good... damn good! But I am happy with either version!
"I Hope You Dance" on SGB is as good as ANYTHING I've ever heard from anyone else.
So for the money, it's not bad. Just steer Way clear of the Weird Al and CHER discs!

Well if anyone is interested, Karaoke Surplus has the set on sale for 68 bucks, yep that's right a buck a disc. Everyone else is still bleeding it for 99 and up.
Chances are any company you order it from would probably price match, since from my understanding SGB as a company is no more and folks are just selling off the remaining stock.

I bought SCG8140 last month on Karaoke.com, and it is still available. That disc has STP's Interstate Love Song on it. I sang both versions over the last few weeks, so that's how I can make such a statement. You need to listen to them again before slamming the SGB version. There are sound samples on the karaoke.com website. The other thing that bugged me about this SC disc is that it has a lot of R&B songs on it. The SGB disc with the STP song is 100% rock. SGB did a good job of producing discs that focus on one genre.

personally except for their headbangers and themed discs, SOund choice has tried to make their other discs appeal to the most people and fill in the most holes at one time. Does that make them better or worse than SGB? No. It is the sound quality that SOund Choice has always been in the forefront with. SGB has always been and always will be hit or miss in quality standpoint, mostly miss in my opinion. The only brands worse is nutech and backstage.

I got a free Nutech SCDG with the purchase of my CAVS DVD202G player. The player rocks...the SCDG is the worse thing I've ever seen - thats why they gave it away. At the time though, I bought a Magic Tracks SCDG which was pretty kewl. I still like my CDG discs better though, I can kind of narrow down the music selection.

Did you get the CAVS DVD202G with the USB port in the back for adding a hard drive to it making it a karaoke jukebox? Because I'm very interested in this player and would like some user info on it.

No Robdog, I got mine a couple years ago - that USB one is a newer model, but I am kicking that one around. I can say I absolutely love mine...it gets used hard a couple times a week and has never let me down. Mine is for home use only but at my parties we sometimes have it running all night - literally... . So far I've been very impressed with everything I've gotten from CAVS except for the CAVS/Nutech tracks. If you do find someone who has purchased the USB one, I'd sure love to have their take on it...I love to have one, but just can't justify the expense right now.

Don't need to, I bought the SGB set when I was starting out...biggest mistake I ever made, I have ears, the Sound Choice version is FAR better. I could give a rip about what other genres are on the disc. The Spotlight series were designed for kj's, not the average singer so other genres are good for that purpose.
No wonder people don't care about & frequent/support the undercutters with crappy systems/selections, if SGB discs are good to their ears.

When you say this is better or that is better, compared to what? The only way I compare any song, from any disc, is how close it came to the song on the radio, played by the original artist. To say one is better, should be based on more than personal taste. What standard are you going to use? I don't understand this. It's based on your personal opinion (not worth anything) do a side-by-side comparision. How do you judge cover bands? They play songs from the radio and copy them. Some can do it very good and some can't come close. Base it on something other than your personal taste. Then, and only then, will you have a valid opinion.

Thx vettelady I'm also interested in all the functions of the player anyways. The USB is the only new feature but it's good to know that the normal functions work good. :hi5:

I have a handful (6-7) of SGB CDGs for fillers. Some of them are okay, I have a guy that sings VooDoo by Godsmack and it sounds pretty good. But I will continue to weed out the SGB discs until they are extinct from my collection.
I would recommend the SGB set for home use if you're not picky about your karaoke. However, if you are starting a business, take out a loan and purchase Foundation I & II or see if you can get the DK series...
just my 2 nickels worth...

My original DK set 99 discs was around $2700. I just saw a DK Millenium set 115 discs for $999. The Millenium set is the original set reworked with some more songs added. I think that's a real deal. Almost 1800 songs 50 cents or so per song. Anything under $1.50 per song is a bargin.
The reason I posted in here is because I was listening to some SGB discs samples on a karaoke site. You have to judge them on a per song basis. Some were really good and some were so so.

Some of that's true however, many of the songs were also deleted due to licensing from the original DK set.

I totally agree that the DK Millenium set at $999 is a "real deal" versus the SGB 1-66 disc set at $100 because you actually get songs worth playing. There are STILL quite a few shows out there using a DK 1-99 / DK Millenium set as their core library. Of course DK has its flaws, such as some songs not recorded in the original key and the pan flute vocal guide (which, for the most part, isn't really that much of a problem). The DK Millenium set is still a credible option for a core library. The SGB 1-66 set is basically good for "filler" as there are some songs exclusive to SGB and some of these versions are "passible" but, for the most part, SGB is very low quality (they actually had the audacity to put "ultra high quality" on their first edition disc labels - what a joke!).
Lonman is right about the DK Millenium set not having every song from the original 1-99 set. There are actually quite a number of songs that never made it on the Millenium set such as "Bad Blood" by Neil Sedaka and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers.

I've actually seen the DK Millenium go for $799 occasionally.
