Jackson I'm glad you asked this question. I didn't have the chance when I first saw it.

Play customers discs....you bet, but please bring them in a jewel case.
I check the condition of the disc when they hand it to me. If there are major problems with scratches I point it out to them.

I used to bring my entire library with me when I went out (all originals). For several reasons, I have stopped doing that. Now, I just bring about 10 discs with me (all compilation burns of stuff I sing from my originals) when I go out. I hand them up in protective sleeves
There have only been a very small handful of shows that I have gone to, where my discs have been refused. Most of them have been at Computer/PC run shows (where the KJ did not have a player), and 1 show (that I can recall), where the KJ did not want to accept anyone's discs... the funny thing about that show, the KJ boasted about having so many songs available (from a library that was under 2,000 songs).
As far as when I do a show, I will always accept a person's personal disc (regardless of whether it's a burn or an original). The only thing is, I will look it over, clean (if I feel it's necessary to do so), and if I feel it looks to be in really bad shape, I will bring it back to the person and tell them that I don't know if it will play in my machine or not. I will also bring a disc back to the person if I know that I have that song in my library (and when I say "That Song", I mean the same manufacturer's version). I will then pull my disc to use.

I am amazed at the number of people that bring their own disc up without any sleeve or case. For most people I've come across, I think they could do just as well to leave 'em at home. But if it gives them a charge, more power to 'em. Just my $.02.

I don't care if they give it to me in case or not. I treat their disc as if it was one of mine. I'm not playing hockey with it. Actually, the cases take up slip room. Can't overlap the cases. I can overlap the naked slips. I pull all the discs in the front row of the rotation. I like to leave the back row undisced, to let me overlap slips, if I need the room. With a disc or case laying in the back row, it screws me up. Usually they didn't just pull the disc out of their pocket. It had to come in something.

This comes directly out of the Karaoke Rules and Tips section of our catalog:
We are very happy to play your personal CD+G discs, if we do not have the song that you want to sing in our collection. However, we ask that you follow these rules and know that you are submitting your discs at your own risk:
You MUST submit your CD+G disc in a protective case.
- It is preferred that you use the thin, hard disc cases.
The disc case must have your name on it.
Your discs must be clean and free of scratches.
You submit the disc at the same time as you submit your Song Request Slip.
You come to the desk and retrieve your disc immediately after you’ve sung your song.

What are the in's and out's of this?
There seems to be some concerns on the part of the singers that some shows don't allow them to bring their own CDs. Is there a general consesus as to whether this is a good thing, bad thing, common practice, rare occurrence, etc.?
Larry
No in's or out's with me. If you have your own disk, and you like your own version, AND the disk is clean, then I'll play it. I always clean a visitor's disk before I put it in my machine. If your disk gets damaged due to some obscure reason, well, I'm sorry. I look after your disk as I look after mine, but accidents can happen.

I have always wondered what the KJ thought when I ask them if I can sing from a disk that I brought. I always check the book first though, I will do a song by a company that I don't even like that much if I can avoid handing my disk to a KJ that has very little room to work with. There only a few songs that I prefer my own over what is already there.
This will help me approach the situation with the right questions on my mind. Now I know that I don’t have to be concerned that they think I’m some kind of snob that won’t sing their music. I have always been a little insecure on this point.

Naaaawwwww... can't imagine anyone feeling you were being a snob for wanting to sing from your own disc. Most KJ's know that folks like to practice at home .... and get used to singing from their own discs. We have a few singers who sing from their own discs ONLY. Not a biggie.. as long as it's protected, clean and they pick it right back up after they sing. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Thanks everybody for all of the feedback and especially to Shotgun CC for a copy of her rules.
My impression is that this doesn't happen very often in our area but that's just based on the relatively few shows I've seen. Maybe it's more common at the professional shows.

Since Kmart and Walmart and every Ma & Pa store around, started selling discs and now any and every Tom, Dick And Harrry has discs and machines, it should be no surprise to anyone. I see it more every year. Even if the song is in the book, they want to sing the one they practiced at home. I can't blame them for wanting to sound good, with a disc that they are familiar with. I never sing a song unless I do it at home first. They are paying for the discs, which helps us because the manufacturers sell more. They can then afford to come out with more songs for us. It's a win, win situation. So everyone of us should be playing, whatever the customers throw at us. ![yes ](./images/smilies/emot-nod.gif)

There are so many more prople doing this. Don't blame them either. What is funny is that they buy these discs thinking we as KJ's don't already have them. And most of us don't immediately when they come out. Face it. We can't possibly know what everyone wants to sing. Nor can you buy 100 discs every week. But some of them bring them and think it becomes their song because they sang it first. Most of them don't, but there is a few who do. All I can say is, first come, first served. I bought discs for certain songs I thought were popular. Had to have many that never would be used on a disc. But no way can you have every song, everyone wants. So let them use their disc. Make sure they are in good shape before you put them in your machine.
I have seen people spit on discs to clean them. First off I AM NOT TOUCHING THEM.
Nor would they go in my machine.
How do you handle that?

My karaoke shirts are soft cotton. I'll wipe them on my shirt or I have a baby diaper and some stuff I polish them with.

Good baby diapers are hard to find these days. Your right though about the t-shirts.
And God knows we all have an abundance of those lieing around from contests, bars etc.
Thanks

I will try to polish the scratches out of their disc, if I can. I want their discs to play without messing up. Somethings are beyond my control. Some are just totally abused and really scratched.

The people who have discs have always asked my permission if
I would use their disc. I think that says a lot. No one has ever assumed
I would and just handed it to me.
When I used to use discs I would use my shirt to wipe them off too LMAO
I never admitted it before.

I bring my own karaoke discs because I have seen/heard some really bad versions of songs. I buy almost all Sound Choice stuff because they are the best although some of my favorite versions of certain songs are on other brands. I sometimes feel a little odd bringing my disc up to the KJ but then again...who cares? If I got up and sang The Monster Mash in March I'm probably not going to get embarrassed very easily. I used to sing odd stuff just to see if I would do it, and I always did, much to my alarm the next morning (sans: hangover) -oh well-
