KARAOKE SCENE MAGAZINE ONLINE! - ChetBassetti performs Summertime on Karaoke Showcase - An early MM sub...gotta get up early Monday...a tough one for an souless kid from the midwest :)...Billy recorded this in 1966 on the LP Billy Stewart Teaches Old Standards New Tricks. It is a radical interpretation of the George Gershwin song, and reached the Top 10 on both the pop and R&B charts using the jazz practice of scat singing. Bo Diddley discovered Stewart playing piano in Washington, D.C. in 1956.He died at age 33 in 1970 when the car he was driving plunged into a River, killing him and three members of his band (my apologies to Billy Stewart..a true artist..this song was most likely like falling off a log for him..I can only imagine him walking in a recording this in one take in the morning and then going out for lunch!...it took me about 100 takes!)....Chet
